Frank Yallop has resigned as coach of Major League Soccer's Galaxy to take up the reins of the expansion San Jose Earthquakes - the team he led to MLS titles in 2001 and 2003 before leaving to coach the Canadian national team.

The boss stepped down on Sunday evening after the team played a charity match for victims of the recent California wildfires, and just before the team left for a postseason tour.

"Obviously, we're disappointed," David Beckham told reporters. "We felt that he was the right man. We felt that he's a good manager and a strong character with the team."

Meanwhile, the Earthquakes are delighted to have Yallop back in charge.

"As we're starting anew, this is a step in the right direction," stated San Jose general manager John Doyle. "Frank has history here, his best years of coaching were here, and he has a great way with players. We needed a good name and good coach, and we have that in Frank."
