The former Costa Rica star, who also played for the likes of Derby County, West Ham United, Manchester City Malaga and Rosario Central during his 13-year career, made the announcement on Friday. He netted twice in 12 games for the Fire after arriving in midseason.

"It was difficult, but this decision had to be made," said Wanchope. "The truth is that in these past six months, I had to put a big effort into recovery after matches and training."

"I think it's a shame that Paulo has to retire at such a young age for a professional footballer," added Fire coach Juan Carlos Osorio. "Because of physical problems, I can only agree with him that it was the best thing he could do."
