Freddy Adu made good from the spot near the break, but a pair of second half Vitória Setúbal goals put Benfica out of the Carlsberg Cup on 3-2 aggregate after a Wednesday night 2-1 road defeat.

The young American was given the start up front, and made his presence well known until being removed with five minute to play.

Just past the half hour, Adu played a splendid ball for strike partner Gonzalo Bergessio, who clumsily fired over. Two minutes later Vitória defender Adalto saw yellow for chopping down the US international.

As the clock ticked into first half stoppage time, Bergessio was tripped up in the area by Ricardo Chaves and Adu coolly stepped up to give the Eagles a halftime lead.

Ángel Di María nearly gave Benfica a two-goal edge in the quarterfinal tie in the 61st minute, but his effort caught the woodwork.

Vitória drew level six minutes later when Matheus buried a weak Marc Zoro clearance. With seven minutes on the clock, Edinho hit the series winner after combining well with Adalto.

Adu had a chance to put the visitors back in front on the away goal rule a minute later, but wasn't able to get much on his shot after being played into good position and Vitória keeper Eduardo scooped it up comfortably.

Benfica resume the league race with a Sunday visit to lowly Paços Ferreira.
