Tarpley scored her second goal of the tournament in the sixth minute, knocking in from six meters after Lauren Cheney's shot was saved by the keeper.

Italian captain Patricia Panico headed the ball into the net in the 14th minute, but she was called offside.

Italy did not have many chances in the second half, only registering one shot. Melania Gabbiadini took that shot from 10 yards out, but USA keeper Hope Solo made a great save to keep the clean sheet.

Cat Whitehill had two chances from set pieces for the US in the second half, but both were saved by Italy keeper Chiara Marchitelli.

The US almost scored the dagger in the 72nd minute when Tobin Heath got the ball to O'Reilly, who then fed it to Cheney, but her shot was saved by the keeper.

O'Reilly then scored to put the US up 2-0 only two minutes later. Amy Rodriguez and Cheney combined to get her the ball before the striker beat a defender to put the ball in the net from 14 meters.

US captain Christie Rampone was named Women of the Match for her job in defense.

The US will play Norway on Monday. A win or tie will see the US into the final, while a loss would put them in the third place match.
