Pia Calls 24 to First Camp

by Greg Seltzer - December 4, 2007

New US Women's National Team coach Pia Sundhage has called the first training camp of her tenure, summoning 24 players to the Home Depot Center for a five-day gathering that begins on Saturday.

Seven collegiate newcomers join the ranks of 16 World Cup 2007 veterans, with a fit again Heather Mitts rounding out the selection.

"It's a short camp, but it will be valuable time spent together as a team and a unique moment for me to have a chance to work with the best players in the United States for the first time," Sundhage told ussoccer.com.

"It will give us the chance to get to know them as players a little bit more, they'll get the chance to learn my style and I'll also get the chance to get to know them off the field."

The team will return to competitive play during January's Four Nations Tournament in China, with a view towards Olympic qualifying in April.
