The Brazilians attacked early with their first solid chance in the 11th minute. Mattheus Carvalho sent in a low drive to the far corner that goalkeeper Earl Edwards dove to his left to deflect away from goal.

Later in the half, Edwards was forced off his line to beat an onrushing Brazilian forward to a loose ball to keep the game scoreless.

In the 27th minute, the Americans took the lead. Joseph-Claude Gyau sent in a dangerous cross for Carlos Martinez to deftly deflect into the far corner with the outside of his right foot. It was Martinez’s second goal in three days as he scored in a Stars and Stripes 2-0 victory Russia on Thursday.

A nice individual effort by Stefan Jerome in the 80th minute caused a Brazilian defender to handle the ball in the box. The ensuing penalty kick was easily delivered home by Jerome to give the US a two-goal lead.

With minutes to go in the match and the result all but decided, Matheus recklessly fouled US defensive midfielder Marlon Duran which saw the referee send off Matheus for the foul.
