Bradley Tabs 21 for Basel

by Greg Seltzer - October 9, 2007

US National Team boss Bob Bradley has called several surprise names into the squad to face Switzerland in friendly action next Wednesday, including seven players aiming for their first international cap.

While the camp will begin Wednesday with familiar faces such as Benfica starlet Freddy Adu, Rangers winger DaMarcus Beasley and Hannover 96 defender Steve Cherundolo, the roster will draw raised eyebrows for the inclusion of several untested youngsters.

Perhaps with an eye to the 2008 Olympic squad, Bradley has called a pair of impressive youngsters from MLS, Toronto FC's Maurice Edu and Robbie Findley of Real Salt Lake.

To boot, the coach has summoned a few European-based players still looking for to break into their respective first teams: Esbjerg keeper Tally Hall, 1860 Munich II defender Steve Purdy and Hamburg strike prodigy Preston Zimmerman.

Also shooting for their first appearance in the senior Red, White & Blue shirt will be Real Salt Lake netminder Chris Seitz, who participated in the Brazil camp last month in Chicago, and U-20 World Cup teammate Danny Szetela of Racing Santander.

With the two uncapped keepers around, the starting nod is expected to go to Reading mainstay Marcus Hahnemann, who will have acting Fulham skipper Carlos Bocanegra, Aalborg captain Danny Califf, Standard Liège star Oguchi Onyewu, Hansa Rostock left back Heath Pearce and Watford policeman Jay DeMerit in his defense.

The midfield crew features the return of Eddie Lewis, who last appeared for the US at World Cup 2006, as well as current central duo Michael Bradley and Benny Feilhaber. Up front, Fulham's Clint Dempsey is expected to lead the line as the senior member of the forward crew.

Switzerland, who are exempt from Euro 2008 qualifying as a co-host with a free pass to the finals, are expected to bring a top choice side that will feature Borussia Dortmund strike ace Alexander Frei and FC Twente workhorse forward Blaise N'Kufo. Twelve players have arrived in camp to start work for the Basel friendly under coach Köbi Kuhn, including Getafe midfield general Fabio Celestini and veteran playmaker Hakan Yakin.
