The Yanks are now 2-0-1 in 2008 after playing three teams currently ranked in the top 25 of FIFA's World Rankings. With the win, the US has now won consecutive games on European soil for the first time ever. They defeated Switzerland 1-0 in Basel last October.

"It's great to come back with a win in Europe," Onyewu told reporters. "In the past, we haven't been as good or as imposing as we would expect to be, and this past year we've been able to emerge as a threat to teams."

"In the past, people would have jumped to play us, but I think each time here we're making a name for ourselves. We're learning how to win and this was a good milestone for us."

The US started the match off well, despite the slippery conditions on the pitch. The Yanks went ahead in the 12th minute off a free kick from Landon Donovan, whose in-swinger found Bocanegra for a header near the six-yard box. The captain now has nine international goals.

The US continued to control the match, with the back four of Steve Cherundolo, Onyewu, Bocanegra and Heath Pearce playing strong defense.

US keeper Tim Howard was, however, forced into action in the 30th minute. Dariusz Dudka's shot forced the Everton keeper, who now has 18 victories and 11 cleans sheets for the US, to make a diving save to his left.

The US went ahead 2-0 in the 35th minute off a Donovan corner. The Galaxy star's kick found Onyewu and the defender headed it in from seven yards out. The defender also scored against Mexico, making it the first time he has scored in back-to-back games, and now has four international notches.

"Defenders are always hungry in these situations to score goals and get on the scoresheet," 'Nats boss Bob Bradley told reporters. "I thought Carlos Bocanegra and Oguchi Onyewu set the tone for the team in those set pieces."

Donovan should have put the US ahead by three early in the second half. The Galaxy forward, who was making his 99th US appearance, nudged his shot just wide on a breakaway.

The US did take a 3-0 lead in the 73rd minute, thanks to an Eddie Lewis free kick from 20 yards out. The Derby man curled the ball around the wall and into the lower right corner of the goal.

The US will play friendly matches at England on May 28th and at Spain on June 4th before their World Cup qualifying match against Barbados on June 15th in California. The second leg will be played away on June 20th or June 21st.
