The US Under-23 Men's National Team lost to Honduras 1-0 in extra time on Sunday in a CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament final that was of little importance with both teams already qualified.

The match was decided during the first added session by Honduras forward George Wilson Welcome.

Stuart Holden registered the first shot on goal for the US in the 27th minute. Robbie Findley created a chance for Chad Barrett shortly thereafter, but the Fire man's header went over the crossbar.

Eddie Gaven pushed forward in the 33rd minute and fed the ball to Findley. The Real Salt Lake forward avoided a tackle and got the ball to Maurice Edu inside the box. His shot targeted the lower right corner of the net, but Honduran keeper Kevin Hernandez was there to make the save.

The US had a good opportunity to go ahead early in the second half. Gaven found Holden, who in turn fed Sacha Kljestan, whose shot was blocked by Erick Norales.

US keeper Dominic Cervi came out to stop a through ball in the 53rd minute, but Luis Alfredo Lopez won the ball off the rebound. His ensuing shot was kept out of the net by US defender Patrick Ianni.

The Yanks could have gone ahead in the 71st minute were it nor for some poor Findley luck. Barrett had the ball on the right wing and got it to the RSL forward, who headed the ball downward. The ball bounced up to hit the crossbar and the game remained scoreless.

Honduras took the lead in extra time, breaking the Americans' 421-minute shutout streak. Wilson Welcome received the ball near the top of the box and deposited it into the upper right corner of the net from 22 yards out.

"I congratulated our players in the locker room for their effort," US head coach Peter Nowak told reporters. "It was a very difficult tournament for us and for both teams in terms of knowing how you're supposed to prepare yourself from game to game."

"As we said, we work on the spirit and the team mentality and it worked pretty well. We're happy to be going to the Olympic Games and sometimes for the players it's just, they're relieved to get it all behind them and looking forward to getting some MLS games."

The US could not equalize the match despite out shooting Honduras 23-9.
