Rosters Set for US v England

by Sean O'Conor - May 22, 2008

US coach Bob Bradley has slimmed down the 33-man roster to a final 22 ahead of next Wednesday's National Team friendly with England.

As expected, European-based Americans feature strongly, with 15 of the 22 plying their trade on the continent, and eight of them from English clubs.

Fulham supplies three of the players: Carlos Bocanegra, Clint
Dempsey and Eddie Johnson - as many called up who are out of contract and the same number that is playing in MLS - Dominic Cervi, Nate Jaqua and Josh Wolff being those selected who are between employers.

Michael Orozco, who plays for San Luis in Mexico's Superliga, takes the number of nations making up the US club roster to nine.

The average age of the US squad is 25 to England's 26. Eddie Lewis is the most senior American at 34 and the youngest Freddy Adu at 19. England's oldest player is 37-year old goalkeeper David James, with Theo Walcott 19 years his junior.

Landon Donovan will earn his 100th cap for the National Team at Wembley. DaMarcus Beasley and Carlos Bocanegra are the next highest-capped with 68 appearances. Cervi and Orozco are the only uncapped players in the squad.

The game is the first of three friendlies with top-drawer opposition for the US as they prepare for the CONCACAF World Cup 2010 qualifiers with Barbados on June 15th at the Home Depot Center and in the islands a week later.

On June 4th, the Red, White & Blue travel to Santander to tackle Spain before facing off against Argentina at Giants Stadium on the 8th. The US are unbeaten in 2008 and on a five-game unbeaten streak with back-to-back wins on European soil, over Switzerland and Poland.

LA Galaxy's David Beckham will reach 101 caps if selected to play for his country, while former Real Madrid colleague Michael Owen, with 89 caps, is nine goals short of Bobby Charlton's England scoring record with 40.

Beckham apart, all of the Three Lions' 31-man roster play in their Premier League and seven participated in the 2008 Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester United in Moscow.

England's preparations have been boosted by news that coach Fabio Capello will not have to fly back to Turin a day before the game to face prosecutors investigating tax irregularities from when he coached Roma between 1999 and 2004.

Five months into Capello's reign, England are still very much rebuilding and have yet to find a new rhythm. Capello's two games in charge have both been muted affairs - a quiet 2-1 win over Switzerland at Wembley and an even more uneventful 1-0 loss to France in Paris.

While the real tests will begin with the World Cup qualifiers in the fall, Capello will be looking to the Wembley clash with the States to show that some change is afoot from the unsuccessful Steve McClaren era.

Franco Baldini, one of Capello's four-man Italian backroom staff, wasted no time in criticizing England's lack of technique after only their first game in charge, so their performance against the US will be closely watched in terms of the stated mission to make them more of a passing and less of a direct team.

There are a few interesting club clashes thrown up by the contest. Galaxy club mates Landon Donovan and David Beckham look certain to cross swords at Wembley, while West Ham's Jonathan Spector could end up marking Upton Park teammate Dean Ashton at some stage.

Spector and fellow former ManU Yank Tim Howard could line up against former colleagues Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown and Wayne Rooney, while Watford's Jay DeMerit could be reunited with former Hornet Ashley Young on opposing sides.

Kick off is 3:00 pm ET on Wednesday May 28th. The game will be shown live on ESPN Classic and will be shown via tape delay at 7:00 pm ET on Galavision.

UPDATE
: Toronto FC's Maurice Edu has been tabbed to step in for Benny Feilhaber, who injured his knee during the Under-23's Toulon Tournament opening 3-2 loss to Turkey on Wednesday.
