USMNT Makes Chicago Brazil Date

by Johannes de Jong - August 13, 2007

In a game dubbed the Clash of Champions, the US Men's National Team is slated to play against Brazil on September 9th in Chicago - rather than against Mexico at Azteca as had previously been scheduled.

The original friendly against Mexico was canceled for financial reasons, reportedly focused on the distribution of television rights.

In the new match, the CONCACAF Gold Cup winners are pitted against the victors of this year's CONMEBOL Copa América - South America's major international tournament, in which the US took part under special invitation.

Bob Bradley and his crew will be forced to defend a 10-3-1 record for the year, which included play in two major regional tournaments. Brazil, currently under the direction of coach Dunga, have posted seven wins out of 11 matches in 2007.

"We have developed a tremendous schedule for 2007," Bradley said in a ussoccer.com interview. "Adding Brazil is another important piece of the puzzle as we continue to build our team towards World Cup qualifying next year. We are very much looking forward to the challenge."

For the Samba Kings, the encounter comes just three days before a clash with Mexico in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Viewers in the US will be happy to note that the game will be broadcast live on espn2 and Univision, starting with the 3:00 pm CT kickoff time.
