Blackburn and Hammarby made first leg leads stand up, while Danny Califf's Aalborg stormed past HJK for a place in the UEFA Cup proper.

BLACKBURN CRUISE PAST MY-PA
England hopeful David Bentley's stunning left-footed volley, and the ensuing 2-0 Rovers win over Finnish side MyPa (3-0 on aggregate), ensured entrance into the next round of the UEFA Cup for Mark Hughes' men.

It was a game in which headlining striking duo Roque Santa Cruz and Benni McCarthy were both given the night off, while summer signing Maceo Rigters was given his first competitive outing in new club colors, alongside former Wigan ace Jason Roberts.

Bentley, who has been drawing comparisons to the Three Lions' current right-sided icon David Beckham for his similarly pinpoint deliveries was Rovers' danger man, almost breaking the deadlock in the 31st minute when his long range effort fizzled just wide of the post.

The ex-Gunner youngster - no stranger to outlandish European goals having scored a 30-yard volley against Red Bull Salzburg and a 30-yard free kick against Bayer Leverkusen in this very same competition last year - would finally find the back of the net for Rovers when his left-footed volley from Morten Gamst Pedersen's chipped ball made it past away keeper Tuomas Kansikas.

With Blackburn continuing to overpower the visitors in possession, it remained a lax evening for American keeper Brad Friedel, who found himself a spectator for much of the outing.

Bentley flashed a free kick over the bar in the 60th minute before setting up Roberts on the last kick of the game as the ex-Latic - often the target of rumored interest from Fulham over the summer - put a frustrating evening behind him to notch his first goal of the season, having assisted Santa Cruz for the game winner against MyPa in the previous fixture.

Friedel and Rovers will hear their UEFA Cup fate on Friday afternoon.

STANDARD EASE PAST KÄERJÉNG
US National Team defender Oguchi Onyewu came on as a sub to help shore up the backline as Standard Liège claimed a late 1-0 (4-0 on aggregate) victory over Luxembourg side Käerjéng to go through to the next round of UEFA Cup play.

After a tame first half in which Remy Mukenge had one of the solitary goalward efforts through his ninth minute strike for the visitors, the teams came out of the halftime dressing room with little added impetus.

Onyewu came on at the half for Costa Dante to add a more experienced presence at the back.

Finally, in the 79th minute, Ali Lukunku would create a moment of promise for the home-side, seeing his clever effort cruelly denied by the post.

With the clock ticking to its final moments, Standard would get a late winner when Igor De Camargo headed home with just a minute left of regulation time.

Despite failing to create an overwhelming impression, Standard move on to the next UEFA Cup round, and will discover the next round opponents on Friday's draw.

FFK PAY THE PENALTY
Brian West and Norwegian side FFK Fredrikstad battled, but ultimately saw their UEFA Cup dream crippled by a late Hammarby penalty in a match that ended 1-1 (3-2 on aggregate) in favor of the Swedish visitors.

The home side went ahead in the 84th minute when John Anders Bjørkøy found the net from 25 yards out, a strike that would've sent Fredrikstad packing into the next round.

To set up a thrilling ending, Johan Sjöbergs was adjudged to have handled in the box, with Hammarby halftime sub Sebastián Eguren coolly slotting home the decisive penalty near time.

With just seconds left, American strikers Charlie Davies and West both entered the field of play for their respective teams, but the recently called up USMNT player Davies surely left the happier, with the next round of play to look forward to.
