Freddy Adu scored three classy goals to lead the US Under-20 National Team to a 6-1 drubbing of U-20 World Cup Group D foe Poland in Montreal on Tuesday evening.

Danny Szetela added a pair of goals, while bookend wingers Robbie Rogers and Sal Zizzo each recorded two assists.

Despite the eventual result, it was Poland who jumped to the early lead after Josmer Altidore's early effort sailed wide for the US.

Szetela lost a challenge to Patryck Malecki, who set up Dawid Janczyk to open the scoring after just five minutes.

Only five minutes later, the Baby 'Nats were level as Szetela capped Tony Beltran's deep service with a bullet header in off the bar.

Poland keeper Bartosz Bilakowski was wise to an Adu distance drive at the quarter hour, but would have no answer for what the Real Salt Lake playmaker would conjure up in the 20th minute. Zizzo won the ball in midfield and fed the #11 shirt, who cut towards the endline before spinning back infield to send an unstoppable laser-targeted curler in off the far post.

Near the half hour, Altidore and Adu compelled Bilakowski into a pair of saves from long range.

In the 36th minute, Ofori Sarkodie replaced Julian Valentin, who had taken a Malecki elbow to the eye that opened a gash - somehow, the offender was not carded.

Poland picked up the pressure as the half drew to a close, but left just enough time for the US to extend its lead seconds before the ref blew for intermission.

Zizzo raced down the right flank, beating three defenders on his way to the area. The UCLA ace slammed on the brakes to cut back for Adu, who settled before firing lefty into the top corner from 15 meters.

US left back Anthony Wallace blocked a Janczyk try in the 50th minute, then set up Szetela for his second goal of the day two minutes later. The FC Dallas defender unleashed Szetela up the gut with a smart pass, and the active Crew midfielder dutifully slammed home from just inside the area.

Smelling blood, Thomas Rongen's boys started feeling their oats and batted the ball around with flair. Poland could hold them off for only so long, and Altidore got into the fun with 20 minutes to play.

Adu led Rogers to the touchline with a fine pass, and the Crew rookie picked out Altidore for a far post tap-in.

Midfield maestro Michael Bradley was able to load up from distance a few times in the waning moments, but it was Adu that would hammer the final coffin nail.

With four minutes remaining, Rogers won a midfield battle to play the teen phenom into the clear. Adu rounded the keeper casually before slotting the hat trick maker to join Szetela as joint top tourney scorer.

"Every player in the world dreams of a match like that," he told reporters. "Of course, we're delighted and we'll celebrate in the proper manner, but we still have to play Brazil and that's a crucial game which we'll be turning our attentions to very quickly."

The US, who now lead Group D on four points, close up first round shop against the junior Seleçao  in Ottawa on Friday.
