Josmer Altidore buried his second goal of the game with seven minutes left to earn the US a 2-1 win over Brazil in Ottawa and the top spot in FIFA Under-20 World Cup Group D.

On Friday evening, Thomas Rongen got superb netminding from Chris Seitz and a top notch overall team effort, led by captain Freddy Adu.

Robbie Rogers forced the game's first save with a driven dipper from nearly 30 yards that kept Brazil keeper Cássio on his toes.

Midway through the period, Seitz stared down a long range blast from Real Madrid prodigy Marcelo.

Rogers responded with a run-and-cross for Altidore, who couldn't make good enough contact to trouble the Cássio. Adu quickly returned on the attack and set up Rogers for a shot over.

In the 25th minute, Adu forced a turnover in the Brazil end and Altidore scooped up the loose ball to slam home from the top of the box.

Brazil promptly tested Seitz three times from long range, with the only shot on target easy prey for the US goalie. Nine minutes before the break, the ever-dangerous Jô forced an alert save from the Real Salt Lake man with a close range poke.

Seitz then raced out of his area to head away from Jô pressure in the 41st minute and handled a goalmouth scramble just before intermission.

Brazil star Alexandre Pato thought he had chested down a long ball into the clear in the 51st minute, but the flag went up.

Seitz stood tall again at the hour to deny Jô, then watched two minutes later as a one-time chip from Pato sailed wide.

A minute later, Adu was dragged down at the right corner of the area and his ensuing free kick required a top drawer stretch top over from Cássio.

The junior Samba Kings would pull level in the 66th minute after Renato Augusto collected a weak clearance and slipped through two defenders with a neat juggle move to fire a sidekick self-volley into Seitz. The left rebound was then touched home by the charging Leandro Lima.

The goal lifted Brazil, who went into top gear. Seitz passed tests on Jô tight angle tries in the 71st and 74th minutes before the US started pushing back.

In the 83rd minute, Adu accepted a deep throw-in and wiggled his way along the touchline past two defenders with a sublime piece of skill. The skipper darted into the area and cut to his left for a shot, which was blocked straight to Altidore for an easy winning dunk.

The Brazilians weren't finished swarming, however, and Seitz had to come up big on efforts from Jô and substitute Carlos Eduardo to preserve the victory.
