Adu Paces Tune-Up Win

Freddy Adu scored the first goal and assisted on the second as the United States Under-20 National Team earned a 2-1 victory over Chile in a warm-up match for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Coming off of last week's 1-0 loss to Argentina, the US seemed to come out flat against a Chile side that many expect to surprise at the upcoming tournament.

Chile came out with the intention of putting the US under pressure and succeeded in doing so most of the first half, while the Americans were only able to create opportunity through individual effort.

Adu was the first with a shot in the 10th minute, though his fancy moves would only earn him a bulge in the side netting.

It wasn't until Adu scored in the 42nd minute from a great Jozy Altidore pass that the US showed they were capable of creating chances as a unit.

The New York Red Bull made it past his defender on a breakaway and slotted across the penalty area to Adu, who still had the keeper to beat. Pushing to his right, he coolly finished down the middle past Christopher Toselli.

The score breathed life into the US side and both Danny Szetela, strong in midfield all game long, and Robbie Rogers had chances to double the score in injury time.

Chile - already playing without four regular starters who will miss the first game of the U-20 World Cup - made six changes at the half, while the US only brought Sal Zizzo on for Johann Smith.

The pressure came more evenly from both sides in the second half and Rogers finally doubled for the US in the 78th minute.

Having taken a pass from Adu in the corner of box, Rogers took a touch to fire past Toselli from a nearly impossible angle.

Nathan Sturgis brought Jaime Grondono down in the box in the late going, and was lucky to only receive a penalty call and not his second yellow of the game.

Alexis Sanchez made easy work of the free shot, but Chile were unable to find the equalizer in the remaining eight minutes.

Next up for the U-20s is their World Cup tournament opener against North Korea on June 30th.
