▪ Norway Weekend Review

Hammarby's finishing again let them down as they fell on Monday night to rivals Djurgårdens, while a Tighe Dombrowski strike wasn't enough for a poor Sirius who were floored by Mjällby for their third consecutive league loss.

BITTER DERBY DEFEAT FOR HAMMARBY
Hammarby again failed to capitalize on their chances and suffered a 1-0 loss to bitter rivals Djurgårdens on Monday night.

Charlie Davies made an early second half substitute appearance as his Stockholm club was shut out.

Hammarby arguably had their best chance of the night only 30 seconds in as forward Paulinho Guara fired a shot off the post with only Pa Dembo Touray to beat.

Bajen controlled the majority of the opening stanza and saw more chances come and go as Davies' forward replacement, Petter Andersson, saw his free header from an Erkan Zengin cross go high above goal when he should have done better.

Djurgårdens pressed back in the waning stages of the first half and Mikael Dahlberg was denied twice in short succession on a pair of similar chances inside the right of the penalty box.

Davies made his appearance early into the second stanza when he came on for Sebastian Eguren. The early sub was unplanned as Eguren, Hammarby's most influential player on the night, was forced to come off due to injury. The BC grad moved up to forward and Andersson slid back to a midfield position as Bajen rearranged their side.

In the 60th minute, Djurgårdens' Sweden international Mattias Jonson broke free on the left and fired in a low cross to an onrushing Dahlberg, who was able to redirect the ball past Benny Lekström and inside the near post.

Davies showed class in the 70th minute when he burst through the final third and around his defender to get into the box, but his low blast was held by Touray.

DIF should have extended their lead with 10 minutes remaining when they were awarded a penalty for a poorly timed tackle by Jose Monteiro. However, Daniel Sjölund's weakly placed effort was easily held by Lekström.

Bajen had a late chance to even up the contest when Louay Chanko's freekick was headed against the outside of the post with a lurking Davies waiting to pounce on the rebound.

HIF's loss leaves them in eighth place in the Swedish top flight as they get ready to face Fredriksstad in UEFA Cup qualifying on Thursday and Halmstad at home on Sunday with forward Petter Andersson suspended, which may open a way for a Davies start.

DOMBROWSKI GOAL NOT ENOUGH FOR SIRIUS
IK Sirius fell 3-1 to hosts Mjällby AIF and slid from third in the table to seventh in a tightly packed Superettan table.

Versatile back Tighe Dombrowski continued his goal scoring ways as he notched the lone goal for the Uppsala club. His tally surprisingly moves him into a tie for second place in the team goal scoring race.

Sirius started the game in the worst possible way when fill-in rightback Fredrik Olsson was beaten down his flank by Marcelo Sarvas, who raced in alone and slid home the opener under Jon Rytterbro only two minutes in.

The Uppsala side battled back and equalized after 15 minutes through the hot boot of Dombrowski. A misplayed corner kick resulted in Pierre Gallo feeding the #5 shirt, who timed his run perfectly to fool the entire Mjällby defense and bury his shot off the goalpost.

Chances continued to flow for both teams and Sirius deserved a better fate when Andreas Eriksson and Daniel Hoch juggled their way through Mjällby's defense only to see the former's picture perfect turn and volley crashed off the post.

Mjällby jumped out to a lead in the 54th minute when Adam Berner took advantage of a giveaway in midfield to race clear and bang home his own rebound after the Sirius defense was slow to react.

The nail in the coffin came 20 minutes later when Sirius' backline again hesitated to give away another one-on-one situation, which Marcus Ekenberg gleefully dispatched to close out one of the worst halves of the year for the Uppsala team.

The disappointing result leaves a slumping Sirius with three straight losses and drops them out of the promotion zone. The newly promoted side will look to jump in the standings on Saturday when they face bitter rivals Enköpings SK.
