Galway's Oliver Fenn had a shot on goal in the fifth minute with a low drive that Pat's keeper Brendan Clarke saved. The Saints had their own opportunity shortly after but a cross into the box was collected by Galway keeper Gary Rogers.

The Pats took the lead in the 22nd minute thanks to Mark Quigley. Gary O'Neill beat Wesley Charles to get the ball to Quigley, who then put it in the net from close range.

Bobby Ryan should have put the Pats up 2-0 in the 60th minute, but his shot went over the bar.

Galway captain John Fitzgerald received his second yellow card in the 68th minute for fouling Quigley, and the 10 men could not find an equalizer.

St. Patrick's Athletic next play at Bray Wanderers on Friday.
