"(He's going to get) match fitness and match experience," said Wanderers press officer Daniel Reuben to American Soccer Daily.

Smith, who goes on a one-month loan to the League Two club, could see his stay at Darlington increase, depending on how well he performs. "It could be extended, but we'll see how the first month goes," explained Reuben.

The move to Darlington will be Smith's second loan move in as many years. Last year, Smith was sent to League One side Carlisle United where the Connecticut product played 14 games, registering one goal.

Since his tenure began at Bolton in 2006, Smith has seen the field for the Premiership club three times, all appearances coming in a substitute role.

Darlington - who have a pair of strikers on the mend - currently sit in fourth place in League Two, three points behind Jemal Johnson's MK Dons.
