| The US defender went the distance in the heart of defense for Les Rouches, who stand two points ahead of second place Anderlecht after five rounds. The first half ended scoreless, but not for lack of event. Veteran Brugge striker Sven Vermant went close in the eighth minute, and Standard ace Milan Jovanovic was denied a penalty claim in the 12th. Standard moved the ball well in the middle stages of the period, but real chances eluded them until away keeper Stijn Stijnen tipped over a Dieumerci Mbokani header in the 39th minute. The home crowd were nearly pulled out of the game at the beginning of the second half, but Jovanovic woke them up by following up on a 65th minute Mbokani double rebound to open the scoring. While the ground was still shaking, Vermant tapped home a cross from erstwhile Standard attacker Karel Geraerts to level quickly. Undeterred, the home side went ahead to stay only two minutes later as Mbokani converted a deflected feed as the Brugge defense did their statue imitations. FCB Philippe Clement was sent off for a second booking in the 71st minute, effectively hampering his team's chance of another comeback. Stijnen kept his side in the game with stops on Axel Witsel and a free running Jovanovic, but the damage had already been done and his teammates were unable to threaten for an equalizer.
