In a dramatic fashion, Neven Subotić scored in added time to secure Mainz an important 1-1 draw in Freiburg in a game between two teams with promotion aspirations.

The game started off slowly in rainy conditions, but by the end of the first half, the teams began to pick up the tempo.

Neither team from Germany's southwest was able to find the back of the net in the first stanza. This was largely in part to the two keepers, Michael Langer for the hosts and Dimo Wache for the visitors, who both were able to parry a couple of dangerous shots on goal.

The fast pace continued in the second, but the teams lacked precision until the 66th minute when Mainz striker Isaac Boakye missed barely wide with a low burner.

The shot was a wake-up call for Freiburg, and nine minutes later, the Breisgauer took the lead. On the play, Kevin Schlitte got on the end of a Dennis Aago corner at the near post and headed the ball past a helpless Wache.

Both teams continued to play offensively in the last quarter of an hour, but neither was able to find the back of the net until Mainz earned a corner with time quickly elapsing. After Daniel Gunkel sent the corner into the box, Subotic was able to come out victorious in a chaotic game of pinball to shove the ball over the line past the sprawling Langer.

The draw keeps Mainz in second place in the standings, even on points with third place Greuther Fürth. Next week, Jürgen Klopp's charges return home to face struggling Kaiserslautern on Friday night.
