The hosts came out flying, clearly determined to end their three-game tourney scoreless streak. However, none of their nine shots on goal would find net, including a deflected Karim Benzema effort that Allan McGregor smothered.

Rangers opened against the run of play when Beasley found Alan Hutton, who won a corner kick. The US international's serve was spot on for Lee McCullough to rise and head home in the 23rd minute.

Lyon ace Juninho then threatened with a string of free kicks. After whistling wide and forcing a McGregor save, the Brazilian fired on off the crossbar just before intermission.

After the break, Beasley sparked the visitors to a pair of insurance tallies. In the 49th minute, he again found Hutton wide, and the fullback picked out Daniel Cousin for a cool finish.

Four minutes later, Cousin lobbed long for Beasley to control and slot for a Rangers third.

The home side would strike the frame twice more - once again by Juninho and then by Anderson. McGregor issued the final denial with a top stop on sub Kader Keita to preserve the shutout.

"We couldn't have imagined that we would win so emphatically," exclaimed Rangers boss Walter Smith. "I had to pinch myself when the third goal went in."
