RECORD ALVES HAUL LEADS ROUT
Heerenveen recovered from a midweek UEFA Cup collapse by slapping around guests Heracles 9-0 behind an Eredivisie record seven goals from Afonso Alves.

Michael Bradley worked the first 73' minutes in midfield, picking up an early yellow card for a rash tackle.

Alves got the Abe Lenstra party started in the 10th minute, bagging his own rebound after Gerald Sibon played him in alone with a smart through pass.

The Brazilian doubled seven minutes later by burying a restart fro mover 30 meters after being kicked down on the gallop. Alves completed his hat trick 90 seconds later, curling home low after Heracles defender Marnix Smit failed to adequately corral a Michel Breuer long ball.

Bradley tried to imitate the third when sent in by Alves near the half hour, but his finish attempt was easily gathered by Martin Pieckenhagen.

Heerenveen finally added on when Jakob Poulsen ran the right to feed Sibon for a shot into the top corner at the hour, and Alves grabbed his fourth of the day five minutes later with a patient finish from Gianni Zuiverloon's long ball.

The #10 shirt made it 6-0 by tapping home a Michael Dingsdag cross with 20 minutes to go, then walked a square pass from sub Miralem Sulejmani into an open net four minutes later.

Alves scored his seventh of the game and fourth in 12 minutes, with a near post karate kick at the end of Danijel Pranjic's free kick from the left flank. The goal bested a single match record shared by four players, including Johan Cruijff and Marco van Basten.

Sibon benefited from a generous Alves dummy to apply the capper from another Sulejmani assist in the 81st minute.

After the international break, the Frisians will travel to face strugglers AZ Alkmaar on October 21st.

TOP STEP UP PERIOD CHASE
Despite being shorthanded for 45 minutes, TOP Oss edged Friday night hosts Fortuna Sittard 1-0 to move to within striking distance of a promotion playoff berth.

Charles Kazlauskas went his typical 90 minutes at right back as Hans de Koning's squad posted their first away win of the term to set themselves two points behind period leaders RKC Waalwijk.

The American set up TOP's first good chance by splitting two defenders to win a free kick on the right edge of the home area. Erik van der Ven's resulting restart drew a fine save from Fortuna keeper Arjan Christiansen.

Van der Ven then took part in the game's only goal past the half hour, teeing up Eric Quekel in the right channel for a low shot inside the far post.

The visitors were put down a man in the 37th minute after Davy Zafarin stamped Fortuna defender Rick Geenen near his head to draw a straight red card. Soon thereafter, Florencio Cornelia hit the post for the home side.

Revy Rosalia had twin chances to extend the top lead from counterattacks, but saw Christiansen leap to snare a lob shot before misfiring on a cross the second time.

Fortuna, who had an 8-1 corner kick advantage on the night, then went close several times, only to be foiled by Wilko de Vogt. The TOP netminder turned away sub Emrullah Guvenc and Cornelia in succession.

Angelo Simone handed back the man-advantage by picking up his second booking with eight minutes to play, but there was still enough time for Danny Schreurs to clang a drive off the TOP crossbar and for Jurgen Heinrichs to force one more excellent De Vogt save.

The men from Oss will try to make up the period table deficit when they host ADO Den Haag on Friday, while leaders RKC Waalwijk visit FC Eindhoven.
