The New York stadium project got a much needed boost as Red Bull announced it has bought out AEG's stake of the stadium to be built in Harrison, New Jersey. An official design has not yet been released, but it is expected that it will include a roof that will cover all of the seating of the 25,000 seat stadium. In addition, Red Bull named a construction manager to oversee the project. The stadium could open by mid-2009.

It's been a busy week for the Red Bulls as they made their first trade of the offseason. The Red Bulls dealt all-time franchise leading goal scorer Clint Mathis to the Los Angeles Galaxy for a third round selection in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft. The former US international is returning to the Galaxy, the club where he started his professional career. With the addition of the draft pick from the Galaxy, the Red Bulls will have a selection in each round of the 2008 draft.

Turkish defender Ozalan Alpay could be headed to Major League Soccer. The Cologne center back has not appeared for the 2.Bundesliga club this season after offseason surgery. During Alpay's interview on a Turkish television network, he said he would not be headed to the Los Angeles Galaxy. Alpay does have a connection with someone in MLS - he and Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Angel were teammates on English Premier League side Aston Villa from 2000-2002.

Despite missing the playoffs in 2007, Colorado Rapids manager Fernando Clavijo will return to the club in 2008. On the team's website, Managing Director Jeff Plush said, "Fernando will be back for 2008. He has one more year left in his contract. We know that it is a controversial decision and that some people don't agree with it at all. We respect everyone's opinion on the subject, but at the end of the day (owner) Mr. Kroenke believes in honoring the contracts that we sign, and he believes in honoring his word. I think there are some positives to be learned by that."

Meanwhile, the coaching carousel will apparently not travel from Chicago to New York. Both Soccer America and Soccer by Ives have talked to an unnamed source that claims the Red Bulls were denied permission to speak with Fire boss Juan Carlos Osorio.

The interest in the new MLS franchise in Seattle has been fantastic. In less than a week since beginning to accept deposits for season tickets, the club website on Tuesday said that the new franchise had already sold over 6,500 deposits for the 2009 season. The club has also received 3,100 suggestions for the name of the club through their website.

Sports Illustrated is reporting that MLS has granted a one year extension to players grandfathered prior to the designated player rule. Landon Donovan, Eddie Johnson, and Carlos Ruiz are all paid above the league maximum. When the league announced the decision to start the DP rule, those three players, by league ruling, would not count as designated players until 2008. The league has now voted to delay the grandfathered players to count as DP's until 2009.
