MLS News Briefs: From Net to Net

In our weekly peek around the league: Mo Johnston moves upstairs, the Revs look to Costa Rica for an attacker and a German former Champions league hero checks out MLS... no, not that German.

The Christian Gomez DC United era could end this week. Soccer Insider is reporting that the playmaker will be traded to the Colorado Rapids for what could be a package of allocations and draft picks. Gomez is expected to earn $400,000 a season, the maximum allowed for non-designated players.

After losing attack-minded players Andy Dorman and Pat Noonan to European clubs, the New England Revolution are looking south for a replacement. Teletica Deportes has a report that the Revs are interested in Costa Rica international Victor Núñez. The Alajuelense forward has scored 23 goals in 45 games for the Costa Rican powerhouse since 2006.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Lars Ricken is looking at a move to Major League Soccer. "Lars will be flying to the States to take a look at the Columbus Crew club and the area. If he likes it there it's possible that he will soon be playing in the MLS," Agent Kon Schramm told Ruhr Nachrichten. The midfielder is best known for scoring a goal in Dortmund's Champions League triumph in 1997.

Mo Johnston has moved exclusively into an executive role w ith the Toronto FC franchise. Johnston will now be the club's Director of Soccer. The club has hired Englishman John Carver to take over for Johnston as the club's head coach. Carver arrives from English Coca Cola League club Luton Town.

Fire goalkeeper Matt Pickens has apparently agreed to join Championship side Queens Park Rangers, but it is unclear how he would acquire a UK work permit.

Meanwhile, Diego Gutierrez told the Chicago Tribune that he will retire after the 2008 season.

The Sun over in England reports that Derby County veteran midfielder Bob Malcolm is in talks with FC Dallas. Last week, the 27-year old former Rangers man had his Rams pact bought out.
