MLS News Briefs: From Net to Net

In our weekly peek around the league: Jozy Altidore suitors continue to line up, the Red Bulls fume over Dane Richard's injury and the Quakes bring back another former hero as management.

New York Red Bulls midfielder Dane Richards is expected to be out over a month and could miss the club's season opener after spraining his right MCL. In a scrimmage against sister club Red Bull Salzburg, Richards was taken down with a nasty tackle which resulted in the injury.

"From the get-go, there were some cheeky, chippy fouls," goalkeeper Jon Conway told reporters after the scrimmage. "I think they wanted to hit somebody and they did. They got Dane. Now Dane's injured."

Major League Soccer held its waiver draft on Tuesday, with three teams choosing to make a selection. DC United brought in defender Jeff Curtin, Chicago opted to take former Colorado Rapids defender Brandon Prideaux and Houston took RSL forward Kyle Brown.

Another former Quakes star has joined the resurrected club's front office in the person of Ronnie Ekelund. The two-time MLS champ was named San Jose's technical director this weekend.

As has been rumored, Kansas City signed Colombian striker Ivan Trujillo. "(He) is a strong, hard-working target forward that has been a proven goal scorer wherever he has played," said Wizards coach Curt Onalfo. "He plays much bigger than his six-foot frame will add another scoring threat to our roster for the 2008 season."

FC Dallas forward Roberto Mina has broken off contract talks with the league and returned to Ecuador. The forward was briefly a trade target of both the Colorado Rapids and the Houston Dynamo, according to Soccer Insider.

English publication News of the World reported that the Premiership's largest clubs are closely watching Red Bulls teen sensation Jozy Altidore. Both Chelsea and Manchester United are both scouting the 18 year old forward, reported the publication.

The Colorado Rapids have gone to Portugal to sign their latest player. The Rapids signed midfielder Rafael Gomes, a Brazilian midfielder that last played for CD Santa Clara.

Let the cuts begin: the Galaxy have released Kelly Gray, Kyle Martino, and before he even played in a regular season game, former Chelsea man Celestine Babayaro.

Elsewhere, Colorado let Jose Cancela go, the Crew shaved Rusty Pierce from their squad and Real Salt Lake dropped Chris Lancos.

Toronto FC are reportedly looking into the Sunderland duo of Liam Miller and Ross Wallace. Ireland international Miller is a 27-year old central midfielder, while Wallace is a 22-year old left back that is out injured until summer.
