MLS Weekend Review by Mark Flannery and Greg Seltzer - June 17, 2007 |

In MLS Week 11, Juan Pablo Angel and Alejandro Moreno bagged late equalizers to New York and Columbus gain 3-3 shares.

CREW FIGHTS BACK FOR GILLETTE SHARE
The struggling visitors got off to a fast start, with Guillermo Barros Schelotto sending Robbie Rogers free over the top for his first career MLS goal after only nine minutes.
The lead would not last long as a bad giveaway near midfield allowed Adam Cristman to sail in and equalize with a chip shot that Crew back-up keeper Will Hesmer could only waver a glove at three minutes later.
A moment later, Andy Dorman released Pat Noonan with a long ball and the St. Louis native made no mistake in front of goal to put the Revs ahead.

Cristman bagged his second of the day in the 32nd minute by converting a Noonan feed from the high slot on a rush started by the rookie.
Schelotto reduced the effort well a well-placed low shot in first half stoppage time. Ned Grabavoy completed a cross field switch and the Crew playmaker took one touch to fire home.
Then as he did last week, the former Boca Juniors star served up a perfect cross for Moreno to convert. The striker executed a fine diving header around a defender and Columbus had gained the late share.
The Crew will turn around quickly to host Kansas City on Wednesday, while the Revs will welcome Toronto FC on Saturday.

UNITED CONTINUE ROLL AGAINST FIRE
Rod Dyachenko scored his first goal of the season - unassisted in the sixth minute - and Luciano Emilio notched his fourth and fifth of the year on either side of the half.
Meanwhile, the United defense continued to be stingy, allowing only a single goal only after going up 3-0.
The Fire came out in a defense first mindset, understandable with Justin Mapp and Ivan Guerrero lost to the Gold Cup and injuries all across the board: Chris Rolfe, Logan Pause, Chris Armas and Thiago. Dyachenko's first goal was all important for DC in breaking down the bunker.
Brazilian midfielder Fred sent an in-swinging cross that Fire keeper Matt Reis somehow mismanaged leaving the former UNLV star a gift-wrapped shot at the goal's doorstep.
The decimated Chicago side seemed to deflate at the early goal, while buoyed on by the home support, took advantage of the wounded Fire side and scored their second halfway through the first period.
Christian Gomez lobbed over the Fire backline into the path of Luciano Emilio's diagonal run and he lobbed over Reis for his fourth goal of the season.
Dyachenko could have had his second tally just prior to the close of the first half were it not for the splendid effort from Reis. Emilio squared the rookie, who saw his blistering shot from 12 yards parried off to the side, and Bakary Soumare was there to clear the rebound.
Gomez was the instigator for the home side’s third goal as well when he ran onto to a pass from midfielder Devon McTavish. Reis was able to stop the Argentinean’s shot, but the rebound left Emilio with an easy put back.
Jerson Monteiro pulled one back three minutes later to breath a little life into the lifeless Chicago attack, but it was too little, too late for the visitors.
Up next for United is Real Salt Lake at RFK, while the Fire will have a chance for injuries to heal with their next match at Colorado on July 1st.

ANGEL COMES TO NYRB RESCUE
The Red Bulls surrendered the next three goals, however; Kerry Zavagnin's drive from 25 yards and two Yura Movsisyan goals put the visitors ahead with just over 10 minutes to play.
Colombian Juan Pablo Angel saved NY from defeat with a 90th minute penalty kick to set a new MLS scoring record and earn the home team a draw with their Eastern Conference heel chasers.
Angel opened the scoring with his eighth goal of the season from a brilliant header in the sixth minute, giving him scores in six straight contests - an NYRB record. Dave van den Bergh sent a cross across the box from the right sideline to a heavily marked Angel. His header went back across goal to the far post where it beat keeper Kevin Hartman.
Clint Mathis added his fifth of the season in the 15th minute. Dane Richards slipped a ball through three KC defenders for an onrushing and wide open Mathis, whose sliding strike made it past Hartman.
Ronald Waterreus showed how valuable he can be to New York in the 27th minute when Davy Arnaud teed up from 30 yards. The Dutch keeper, playing off his line, extended high to deflect the rocket over the bar.
The Red Bulls almost made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute when Van den Bergh was denied by a point blank save from Hartman. Angel had headed down a long ball just inside the touch line and as quickly as Van den Bergh unleashed his shot, Hartman was there with a fine reflex save.
A New York turnover deep in their own end allowed Argentinean playmaker Carlos Marinelli to move forward and draw the defense with him. His back-roller pass set Zavagnin up with acres of space and his dipping shot left Waterreus, playing way off his line, without a chance.
Marinelli was robbed when his left-footed shot off of a pass from Arnaud from inside the area rattled Waterreus' cage, but just two minutes later, Movsisyan would even the terms.
This time Movsisyan converted on Arnaud's pass from a tight angle. Running onto the cross at the near post, the Armenian striker beautifully redirected his shot past Waterreus at the far post and the score was a level 2-2.
The third goal caught the Red Bulls, and especially Waterreus, napping as Victorine immediately turned a benign midfield turnover into a one v one break for Movsisyan. The 19-year old turned defender Jeff Parke just outside of the penalty area and chipped Waterreus, who had again come off of his line.
Just when Kansas City thought that they may escape the Meadowlands with a win, Jose Burciaga Jr. was whistled for a foul on John Wolyniec. Whether or not a penalty should have been called can be debated, but the defender seemed to smother Wolyniec, leaving referee Abiodun Okulaja not much choice.
Angel stepped up and easily beat Hartman giving New York a share of the points, and with nine goals in his first seven games, set a new MLS record.

CHIVAS USA CLIMB TO SECOND
A Terry Cooke own goal just after the break and Maykel Galindo's 63rd minute clincher was all the offense Brad Guzan would need in net.
After Ante Razov and Alex Zotinca come up empty with long drives, the US keeper turned away a free and loose Herculez Gomez at the home end. A Zotinca mis-kick near his own area allowed the striker to pounce on the opportunity, but Guzan ricocheted the clear 32nd minute chance wide.
The opener came in Keystone Cops fashion, with Cooke inadvertently chesting a well-struck Sacha Kljestan cross into his own net. Jesse Marsch keyed the break by releasing Kljestan into the right corner, and the Rapids' English playmaker seemed as surprised as anyone in attendance when the ball rippled into Bouna Coundoul's cage.
The goal intensified play, with Galindo stopped after running free at Coundoul and Conor Casey watching his soft chip of the onrushing Guzan cleared off the line by Shavar Thomas.
After Francisco Mendoza tested a sprawling Coundoul from distance, the hosts may have suffered a blow to their already depleted backline. Rapids forward Roberto Brown took a chunk out of Claudio Suarez's ankle with a late challenge, and the former Mexico skipper was replaced just after Galindo applied the dagger.
The Cuban speedster latched onto a Marsch lead pass and surged past flat-footed defender Brandon Prideaux before slotting lefty past Coundoul.
Razov spurned a pair of well-crafter chances in the waning moments, but the Chivas lead was safe in Guzan's hands. He turned away a low Brown effort, then dove to palm away Prideaux's restart header.
The victors move on to visit Houston on Thursday, while Colorado get another chance at home to Dallas on Saturday.
