▪ Osorio Handed Fire Reins

New England fought back for a draw against Chivas USA to grab the Eastern perch by a slim margin, while a second half Cobi Jones double earned the Galaxy a share at home.

REVS RALLY TO GO TOP
Chivas USA were able to hold on for a 1-1 draw in New England after scoring just four minutes into the rematch of last weekend's match that saw the Revs win 2-0.

Though between the two teams four players were expected back from Copa América duty, only Taylor Twellman saw any time, making his appearance in the 56th minute.

Preston Burpo made his second start on the year in net for Chivas, and with his eight saves on the day, was a big reason for the visiting side's ability to secure the valuable road point.

The Chivas strike came off of a Alex Zotinca corner that found Claudio Suárez in front of goal. The legendary Tricolores defender's downward header was virtually unstoppable and made it past Matt Reis.

Shalrie Joseph, who missed only his first game of the season in last weekend's match-up, set Adam Cristman up with what looked to be a sure goal in the 41st minute. The Grenada international took a pass from Jay Heaps and one-touched over the defense for Cristman, but Burpo made a brilliant save from point blank range.

The second half almost belonged to the Chivas keeper. Heaps unleashed from 40 yards and a lunging save from Burpo denied the midfielder, but the rebound fell to Steve Ralston at the top of the penalty area. The New England winger's shot hit the right upright and Chivas were out of danger for the moment.

In the 59th minute, Taylor Twellman had his turn to be denied by the red-hot keeper when his header from the penalty spot was kept out only by a diving one-handed effort.

Just 90 seconds later, Twellman was once again stoned in front of goal when he got to the end of a cross from Bermuda international Khano Smith. Flying down the center, Twellman and Burpo were just feet apart when the Revs strike man headed straight on, only to be denied for the second time in as many minutes.

New England's pressure finally paid off in the 64th minute when Steve Ralston's corner kick found Andy Dorman, giving Ralston a share of the all-time MLS assists lead with former Colombian great Carlos Valderrama.

Burpo would continue his near-blinder as the half wore on, notably in the 83rd minute when Smith sent in another nice cross from the left for New England forward Pat Noonan at the far post. Burpo made another reaction save and then had the presence of mind to throw the ball back into play as he was falling into goal.

While Chivas are now off until after the All-Star break, New England travel to New Jersey where they'll take on the New York Red Bulls.

STREAKING CREW LEAVE IT LATE
The Columbus Crew, suddenly the hottest team in MLS, extended their unbeaten streak to six games with a 2-0 victory over cellar dwellers Real Salt Lake.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net for the first 75 minutes until Columbus midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto stepped up to bury a penalty kick in the 76th minute. Eddie Gaven added his second of the year after going almost 600 minutes without a score this year to make it 2-0 with 10 minutes to play.

Columbus would see the better opportunities in the first half, but were unable to convert.

Danny O'Rourke saw his shot from 35 yards barely deflected out for a corner in the 10th minute, then Barros Schelotto's cross into the center found Jacob Thomas, but keeper Nick Rimando made easy work of his redirected shot.

Alejandro Moreno collected at the top of the box in the 31st minute, creating enough space for himself to turn and fire on goal. Rimando made a diving save to keep the home side scoreless.

In the 74th minute, Gaven thought that he had increased his stats with a outstretched leg shot, but the score was correctly ruled offside.

A minute later, Crew forward Andy Herron was brought down on the right side of the penalty area as he attempted to move around Ritchie Kotschau, and referee Alex Prus whistled for the penalty. Schelotto left no doubt with a thundering shot to top center.

In the 80th minute, Alejandro Moreno beat RSL defender Daniel Torres down the left sideline with a stop-and-go move to find Gaven streaking into the box. The former Red Bull appeared to make an off-balance shot with his outside leg, but nonetheless gave his side a two-goal cushion.

Alecko Eskandarian let his frustrations get the better of him in the game's closing minutes when he delivered an elbow to Schelotto on the near sideline. It was straight red for the former DC United man and the end of the night for RSL.

TFC LEVEL FAST AT CHICAGO
Toronto FC moved within five points of first place, but remain fifth in the tightly-packed East after their draw with Chicago in Bridgeview, Illinois.

After a scoreless first half, both teams scored once with Chad Barrett converting a penalty kick for the Fire and Maurice Edu equaling the terms close to the 80-minute mark.

Chicago, under interim head coach Denis Hamlett for the last time, came into the game not having scored in almost three full matches and not having registered a win since April 29th.

Justin Mapp made his appearance in the 63rd minute, just two days after the US elimination from Copa América, and having taken three different flights through three different countries to make it there.

The Fire would take the lead in the 70th minute after some nice combination play from Bakary Soumare and Barrett led to the latter being elbowed over by TFC defender Tyrone Marshall.

The former US Under-20 star stepped up to take and fooled Srdjan Djekanovic, going right leaving the TFC keeper frozen in the middle.

Horrid Chicago defending allowed the visitors to equalize in the 78th minute thanks to a long ball from Marvell Wynne to Edu. With half the Fire side walking and putting no pressure on Wynne, the TFC right back aimed and found Edu streaking through the box.

Seemingly surrounded by red shirts, Edu chested the ball forward to just beyond the penalty spot, finally slotting the ball past keeper Matt Pickens while falling backwards to even the terms.

Chicago welcome Houston on July 12th, while Toronto also have a game remaining before the All-Star break against Houston as well.

Scoring
CHI - Chad Barrett 4 (PK) 70'
TOR - Maurice Edu 3 (Marvell Wynne) 78'

COBI BRINGS LA BACK FOR DRAW
The Galaxy and Wizards turned a scoreless and uneventful first half into a high-scoring second half that left the two teams knotted at two goals apiece.

The Wizards struck quickly, scoring just two minutes into the second half behind Yura Movsisyan fourth goal. Davy Arnaud connected four minutes later to give the visitors a two-goal lead.

Cobi Jones answered the call with goals in the 61st and 75th minutes to finish off the scoring and give LA a come from behind tie.

Jack Jewsbury found Movsisyan, only having come on as a second half sub, deep in the penalty area on the first goal. Two touches later, he had shaken Chris Klein and fired past Joe Cannon for his fourth of the season.

Kansas City took advantage of a terrible defensive miscue in the 51st minute when Ante Jazic attempted to head the ball back to Cannon. The LA keeper fumbled the back pass and Arnaud stepped up to head the ball into the empty net.

In the 61st minute, Landon Donovan, in just his second game since having led the US to the Gold Cup Championship, found Carlos Pavon down the right flank. The Honduras international beat Kevin Hartman, but not the far post, the ball ricocheting back across the penalty area. The ageless Jones was there for mop-up duty and put the rebound in to halve the score.

The 70th minute saw Joe Cannon make a great reaction save on Ryan Pore's rocket following a Wizards penalty kick.

Five minutes later, Jones tied the game at two when Donovan found him running near post. The long time Galaxy midfielder beat his former teammate to the near post giving him a brace and his fourth goal of the season.

The Galaxy's next league match comes August 5th, while Kansas City take on Real Salt Lake next Saturday.

Scoring
KC - Yura Movsisyan 4 (Jack Jewsbury) 47'
KC - Davy Arnaud 3 51'

EARLY GOAL LIFTS NEW YORK
The New York Red Bulls ended their four game winless run with a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids Sunday night in Colorado.

The Bulls jumped back into first place with the road victory after two consecutive losses on this three-game swing away from the Meadowlands, while Colorado continued their dip in form to bring their winless streak to eight games.

New York native John Wolyniec scored in the 19th minute to give the Red Bulls the lead, having made his the start at forward alongside Juan Pablo Angel.

Wolyniec had the first chance of the game in just the second minute when Clint Mathis sent him in alone on the Colorado goal. Rapids keeper Bouna Coundoul's pressure forced the former US international into a poor touch and the ball ran across the endline.

Two minutes later, Colorado had their response just two minutes later when Jacob Peterson latched onto a cross from Colin Clark eight yards from goal, but he was unable to put on frame.

Wolyniec found the back of the net in the 19th minute when Kevin Goldthwaite tried from 25 yards, but his mis-hit only found Ugo Ihemelu, who blocked the shot back out. Wolyniec then teed up from just outside the box and beat Coundoul to the right side.

Five minutes into the second half, Wolyniec was in alone on the Colorado defense but had no help and Ihemelu's take down went uncalled as the forward left the ball back for no one in the area.

Colorado had 15 shots on the night, but only two on target - one of which was a scramble in front of the goal in the 61st minute. Terry Cooke sent a cross in that Herculez Gomez attempted to latch onto, but Ronald Waterreus was able to smother.

Dane Richards seemed to be set for a break away in the 82nd minute, but he and Dan Gargan collided in a race for the ball and the challenge was waved off.

Colorado's best chance came in stoppage time when Peterson forced Waterreus into a reaction save at the far post off of a cross from Gargan.

Colorado are back in action after the All-Star break, while New York next takes on the Revolution.

NYRB - John Wolyniec 2 19'

CHING KEEPS CHAMPS ROLLING
The battle between the two hottest teams in MLS was won by the home side as Houston stretched their unbeaten run to eight games with a 1-0 victory over DC United in Houston.

Brian Ching connected in the 33rd minute to put Houston on top and the Dynamo held on for the win, preventing DC from maintaining their position as the East's top team.

United had an early chance early to get on the board when Christian Gomez took a free kick from deep on the right flank. His dipping shot bounced in front of keeper Pat Onstad and off the crossbar to put a nice scare into the home team.

Joseph Ngwenya found a loose ball at midfield that he sent over for Ching on the flank in the 26th minute. The Hawaii native unleashed from the right edge of the area and forced Troy Perkins into a fingertip save.

Fred had his own chance in the 30th minute, after battling teammate Luciano Emilio for a loose ball and coming away with it. His shot was straight at Onstad, however, and the score remained knotted at 0-0.

A 33rd minute corner kick was cleared out to 30 yards in front of goal where midfielder Richard Mulrooney collected to fire on target. Ching redirected the shot past frozen United keeper Troy Perkins for his fourth strike of the season.

On the other side of the half, Stuart Holden sent a cross in from deep in the left flank after taking a flick from Ching up the left side. Ching was there to receive at the far post, but his attempted header back across the goal went wide left.

Brian Mullen had a Houston chance in the 71st minute with a left-footer from just beyond the box to force a save from Perkins, and another in the 78th when fired wide left across the goalmouth after taking a pass from Ching.

United were hardly dangerous in the second half, and Houston held on for the victory.
