ONE TFC STREAK OVER, ANOTHER CONTINUES
Toronto FC finally put an end to their record scoring drought, but it wasn't enough to keep from falling to defeat as the Columbus Crew bagged two second half goals to get by their hosts 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The second minute Miguel Canizalez goal brought to a close Toronto's scoreless streak of 824 minutes - more than nine full games without a score. It would do little, however, to prevent the club's winless streak from reaching 10 games, as Jason Garey and Jacob Thomas proved to be all the offense Columbus needed to climb back into the playoff race.

Sixty seconds into the match, TFC would get their attack going as Jim Brennan advanced the ball down the left side of the field before sending in a cross. Narrowly avoiding the fingers of Columbus goalie Will Hesmer, the ball flashed in front of Collin Samuel and Maurice Edu before bouncing around between several players at the far post. In the middle of the scrum, Canizalez was able to step up to slot the ball through traffic, giving TFC their first goal since July 7th.

The Crew would try to answer in the 14th minute as Eddie Gaven's long range shot required Kenny Stamatopoulos to push it over the bar to keep the score in Toronto's favor.

With each team creating few other scoring chances, Canizalez's goal would stand up as the difference heading into halftime.

In the second half, Sigi Schmid's Crew finally woke up offensively, with a little help from a Stamatopoulos miscue. The TFC netminder had come off his line to attempt cutting off a Frankie Hejduk cross, but missed, allowing the ball to reach Eddie on the other side of the box. Seeing Garey standing unmarked in the middle of the area, Gaven dished the ball to him and the forward did the rest, beating the onrushing Stamatopoulos to level the game.

Columbus was not done there, as second half substitute Thomas gathered a loose ball in midfield in the 83rd minute and turned on the jets to race past TFC defender Andrew Boyens. From the right side of the box, Thomas fired a shot at the far post, rattling the side netting behind Stamatopoulos for the game winner.

The win was the first time since July 22nd that the Columbus Crew walked away from a game with maximum points. Their last win was also over Toronto, a 2-0 victory at Crew Stadium. The result temporarily moves Columbus into a tie for the eighth and final playoff spot with Chicago, though the Fire hold the tiebreaker, meaning Columbus is still on the outside looking in.

It will be key for Columbus to get a result in their next match, when they welcome the Los Angeles Galaxy to town next Sunday afternoon.

For Toronto, the playoff picture is getting increasingly darker, with Mo Johnston's club sitting twelve points out of the last postseason spot and just four games left to make up the distance. TFC hits the road this coming Saturday to take on the top team in the league, DC United, this coming Saturday, with a loss sealing the club's fate in their inaugural season.

REVS, RED BULLS TRADE GOALS
The New York Red Bulls and the New England Revolution shared four goals as the teams battled to a 2-2 draw on Saturday night at Giants Stadium.

A late Juan Pablo Angel strike was enough to salvage the tie for the home side, despite giving up a pair of goals to Taylor Twellman, who was forced off with an injury in stoppage time.

Twellman picked up his 13th goal of the season early in the match, heading home a Steve Ralston free kick in the 22nd minute that left Ronald Waterreus with little he could do to deny the prolific forward.

Claudio Reyna tried to duplicate his counterpart's efforts at the other end of the field, serving in a ball in the 24th minute that was met by Francis Doe. The former Atromitos striker used his head to snap that ball goalward, but his shot was off-target, missing wide of the net.

A speedy give-and-go sequence between Dema Kovalenko and Doe set up the Bulls' next scoring opportunity 10 minutes from halftime, with Kovalenko's shot needing to be turned away by Revs netminder Matt Reis to keep Steve Nicol's club out front.

A minute later, a Reyna corner kick would fall perfectly for Seth Stammler to take a crack at net. Beating Reis with his first-time shot, Stammler's attempt had to be cleared off the goal line by US international Michael Parkhurst, temporarily keeping the Revs in the lead.

Seconds later, New York would get the goal they had been searching for, sparked by a Dane Richards run down the right side. Taking on two defenders, Richards made his run to the endline before crossing the ball back into the middle where Doe was waiting. Reaching around his defender with his foot to make contact with the ball, Doe slotted the ball past Reis to level the game before halftime.

A quick shot by Pat Noonan in the 44th minute ended on the wrong side of the near post, keeping the game tied.

At the other end of the field, it looked as if the Red Bulls had broken the deadlock just before halftime when Doe ran onto a perfectly-weighted through ball from Reyna. Coming out to break the play up, Reis misplayed the ball and collided with Doe, allowing the ball to continue its journey into the net.

Unfortunately for the home fans, the goal was disallowed by the referee's assistant, indicating that Doe was in an offside position on the play, even though subsequent replays showed that he was kept on by, not one, but two Revolution defenders.

The two clubs would exchange chances in the opening minutes of the second half, with neither team getting a quality scoring opportunity until after the hour-mark when Reis would once again be tested by Doe's right foot. Turning his defender around, Doe unleashed a hard 25-yard shot that Reis moved to his right to parry away.

An innocent-looking play led to New England's second goal in the 70th minute when New York defender Chris Leitch misplayed a clearance of a long pass, sending the ball into the middle of the field for Twellman. Tracking down the ball on the quick turf, Twellman's sliding blast caromed off the far post and into the net, giving the Revolution the lead and Twellman 14 goals on the year.

In the 80th minute, New England tried to clear out a Reyna corner kick, but the ball was gathered by Kovalenko and quickly sent in to the back post. Jeff Parke had been making a run to that area and headed the ball down. The try bounced in front of Reis and hit the crossbar before it could be grabbed.

Four minutes later, Juan Pablo Angel ran onto a ball that had been flicked forward by the omnipresent Doe, leaving the former Aston Villa star with only the goalkeeper to beat. Having no trouble picking his spot, Angel coolly slotted the ball past Reis' left side to pull the Red Bulls even with the 16th goal in his inaugural MLS campaign.

Neither side earned a good look at goal in the waning seconds and Twellman had to be taken off in stoppage time with a leg injury, ensuring there would be no hat trick for the Revolution superstar.

With the point, New England saw Chivas USA jump over them for the second spot in the league, but the Revolution still only trail leaders DC United by three points in the race for the Supporter's Shield. The next task for the Revs will be to deal with a point-hungry Colorado Rapids club at Gillette Stadium next week.

New York used their point to keep pace with Kansas City, staying two ahead of the Wizards for the sixth position, meaning they would meet this same New England team in the first round of the playoffs if the season ended right now. Bruce Arena's club stays at home in the upcoming week, hosting on Saturday a Real Salt Lake club that seems to be peaking at this point in the season.

RSL DENTS RAPIDS PLAYOFF HOPES
The Colorado Rapids did themselves no favors in their chase for a postseason birth, dropping a 1-0 decision at Real Salt Lake on a rainy Saturday night.

Kyle Brown's first half goal was enough to lift RSL, who themselves are holding out hope that they can pick up enough points over the last few weeks of the 2007 schedule to gain entrance into the second season.

With RSJ veteran defender Eddie Pope starting the game on the bench, the Rapids looked to get on the scoresheet early, with Jacob Peterson's shot in the fourth minute sneaking under a defender before missing just wide of the far post.

Peterson would again be in the thick of things in the 20th minute, getting his head to a Terry Cooke cross, but his effort was snapped directly at RSL keeper Nick Rimando, who made the easy save.

At the other end, Real Salt Lake would get a chance of their own in the 22nd minute in the form of a Kyle Brown header, but it too was not on target, floating just over the bar and out of play.

With the showers turning into a steady downpour, the two Browns in RSL's starting lineup combined to create a goal in the 30th minute. It all started when Chris Brown was given space to shoot on the left side, hitting a hard liner that was knocked away but not out of danger by Coundoul. With Kyle Brown stationed in front of the goal, the rebound turned into an easy opportunity for the second-year player, allowing him to slot post Coundoul for the second goal of his young career.

In the waning moments of the first half, Colorado went on the offensive in search of an equalizer. A Jovan Kirovski header flashed wide of the far post in the 37th minute, followed by an off-target blast from Peterson a minute later. Rimando was also forced to make a save on a Cooke shot in the 40th minute to keep Real Salt Lake out front going into the break.

At the start of the second half, the inexperienced Rapids backline continued to look shaky. With three defenders in the same area to close down Chris Brown in the 49th minute, Kosuke Kimura gathered the ball and went to send it out of danger, but his clearance banged off of Brown and trickled just wide of the net and an unprepared Coundoul.

The Colorado keeper was better prepared to deal with Yura Movsisyan's slow roller in the 65th minute, easily smothering the former Wizards star's shot to keep the Rapids within striking distance.

The best chance for Colorado to get level came in the 85th minute through a Jose Cancela free kick that found its way around the five-man RSL wall, forcing Rimando into making another save by diving to his left to knock the ball away. The follow-up from Omar Cummings was also turned aside by Rimando, helping preserve the shutout and the win for Real Salt Lake.

Having been passed by earlier in the day by the Columbus Crew, the loss ensures that Colorado would finish the week in 10th place, still just two points behind the Chicago Fire for the last playoff spot. If the Rapids hope to climb back into the race for the eighth position, they will need a result in Saturday's game at New England, not the easiest of tasks by any means.

Real Salt Lake has hit their stride since the All-Star Break, picking up four of their five total wins since August 4th to keep their postseason hopes alive, though they will need a lot of help from the teams in front of them. Next up for Jason Kreis' crew is a trip to New York to face the Red Bulls before hosting the top two teams in the West (Chivas, Houston) to begin October.

Scoring
RSL - Kyle Brown 2 30'

Line-ups
COL - Bouna Coundoul; Kosuke Kimura, Ugo Ihemelu, Stephen Keel, Brandon Prideaux, Terry Cooke (Omar Cummings 66'), Mehdi Ballouchy (Jose Cancela 63'), Tony Sanneh, Colin Clark, Jacob Peterson (Daniel Osorno 74'), Jovan Kirovski

MORENO'S 111TH EARNS DC POINT
The Chicago Fire looked set to earn three points at home against the league's best team, but Jaime Moreno had other ideas, rescuing a point for DC United in a 1-1 draw at Toyota Park on Sunday afternoon.

The goal was the 111th of Moreno's career, pushing him two ahead of Chivas USA's Ante Razov and helping DC become the first team in MLS to reach the 50-point level this season.

Chicago jumped out in front in the 18th minute as Chad Barrett settled a pinpoint pass from Cuauhtémoc Blanco just outside the box, ran away from his defender and fired a shot past DC keeper Troy Perkins for his sixth goal of the season.

Juan Carlos Osorio's club would continue to lead throughout much of the game, but a poor goalkeeping decision in the final minutes would cost the Fire two crucial points in their hunt for a playoff spot.

In the 84th minute, Moreno carried the ball down the right side of the field and sent a bending shot toward Matt Pickens in the Chicago net. Able to jump and easily grab the ball, Pickens opted to pull his hand down at the last second, apparently thinking that Moreno's shot would go over the crossbar.

Unfortunately for the Fire keeper, the ball ducked just under the crossbar, salvaging a point for DC United on the road.

The point moves DC United to 50 on the season, three in front of Chivas USA in the race for the Supporter's Shield. United will look to extend that advantage when they host Toronto FC, the team with the least points in the league, on Saturday.

For Chicago, the lost two points loom much larger, as the Fire are in a fight with Columbus and Colorado for the final playoff spot. Still, the draw allows Chicago to move back in front of the Crew by a single point heading into a tough match-up on the road against Chivas USA on Saturday night.

Scoring
CHI - Chad Barrett 6 (Cuauhtémoc Blanco) 18'
DCU - Jaime Moreno 6 84'

DCU - Troy Perkins; Bryan Namoff (Clyde Simms 43'), Bobby Boswell, Greg Vanney, Marc Burch, Domenic Mediate (Stephen de Roux 69'), Brian Carroll (Nicholas Addlery 53'), Devon McTavish, Joshua Gros, Jaime Moreno, Luciano Emilio

CHI - Matt Pickens; C.J. Brown, Wilman Conde, Diego Gutierrez, Dasan Robinson, Calen Carr (Bakary Soumare 72'), Chris Armas, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Logan Pause, Chris Rolfe, Chad Barrett (Floyd Franks 81')

KLEIN STRIKE DOOMS DALLAS
Landon Donovan converted a penalty kick and Chris Klein added a magnificent strike late in the game to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-1 victory over 10-man FC Dallas on Sunday afternoon.

After giving up an early goal to Dax McCarty, the game turned around for the Galaxy midway through the first half when Chris Gbandi received his second yellow card in as many minutes. The ejection forced FC Dallas to play a man down for the remaining 70 minutes, allowing Los Angeles to get a goal in each half to ride to a rare victory.

Dallas went on the offensive early, creating a good opportunity in the sixth minute. Carlos Ruiz's shot from just inside the box deflected off Galaxy defender Ty Harden and came back out to Arturo Alvarez, who unleashed a left-footed screamer that had to be parried over the bar by Joe Cannon.

The Galaxy nearly jumped ahead one minute later as Landon Donovan chested down a pass from Klein in the box and hit a half-shot, half-pass with his left foot at the far post. Racing through was Alan Gordon, but the forward was slightly behind the ball and unable to get a foot on it, missing an opportunity for an easy tap-in on an open goal.

Klein continued to be a threat in the opening stages, receiving a pass from Donovan in the 10th minute and ripping a 25-yard shot at the goal that got under the gloves of FCD keeper Dario Sala, but missed just wide of the far post, going out of play harmlessly.

Despite having the momentum in their corner, the Galaxy would concede the games' opening goal in the 11th minute. Gbandi hit a bouncing cross into the box that Ruiz let go past him, sensing McCarty's presence behind him. Caught off-guard by the dummy move, the Los Angeles defense was unable to close down on McCarty before the 20-year old midfielder could bury his shot past Cannon to give Dallas the early lead.

Things got physical in the 21st minute when Kevin Harmse roughly took Gbandi off of his feet while the Dallas player was making a run with the ball. As play advanced, Gbandi got back to his feet and tripped up Harmse in retaliation as he passed by. Referee Michael Kennedy would serve yellow cards to both players for the incident.

Two minutes later, the Galaxy would earn a penalty kick when it was judged that Gbandi pulled down Klein in the box as he was tracking a Landon Donovan free kick in the air. Having earned a yellow card only seconds earlier, Gbandi was sent off for receiving his second booking in as many minutes.

Donovan stepped up to take the ensuing penalty kick, but would be denied by Sala, only to see the referee signal for a re-kick as Sala had come well off his line by the time the penalty was taken, earning the Dallas keeper a yellow card of his own.

On the second attempt, Donovan would have no trouble beating Sala, slamming the ball into the back of the net in celebration after it had come back out, worthy of another booking.

After five cautions in five minutes, the game settled down as the Galaxy looked for the best way to exploit their man advantage.

Arturo Alvarez's line-drive shot in first-half stoppage time would be grabbed easily by Cannon to keep the game level heading into the break.

In the 50th minute, Los Angeles nearly cashed in on a Donovan corner kick as Gordon rose above the crowd to get his head to the ball and beat Sala, only to see goal-scorer McCarty there to clear the ball off the line and out of danger.

Sala would stay very busy in the 56th minute as Josh Tudela would bang his shot off a Dallas defender, forcing Sala to reverse his course just to get fingers to the deflected effort to keep it out of the net.

Just past the hour mark, undermanned Dallas showed they weren't content in playing for the tie as Juan Carlos Toja's powerful shot from the top of the box was just off-line, sailing wide past Cannon.

Making his 300th career MLS start, Cobi Jones nearly had a reason to celebrate in the 67th minute when his pass through the box found a wide-open Carlos Pavon who had just come into the game, but the Honduran international's chip-shot went inches over the crossbar and out of play.

In the 72nd minute, Jones set up the go-ahead goal for the Galaxy. Holding the ball on the left side of the field, the Galaxy icon's pass through the top of the box was dummied by Pavon, allowing the ball to get to Klein. Taking a touch to settle the ball, Klein blasted a wicked shot that knuckled into the upper corner of the net just inside the near post to give the Galaxy a 2-1 lead.

Pavon had a chance to double the advantage for Los Angeles when he ran onto a through pass behind the Dallas back-line in the 79th minute. With Sala coming out to cut down the angle, Pavon tried a quick chip-shot back across his body, but Sala was up to the task, cutting down the shot with one hand.

The best chance for Dallas to equalize came three minutes from full time when Alvarez cut through several defenders before trying to catch Cannon sleeping with a left-footed attempt, but the keeper was ready and waiting, making the easy save to preserve the victory for the Galaxy.

FC Dallas remains in third place in the West with the loss, with a tough schedule remaining in front of Steve Morrow's club. The Hoops will host intra-state rivals Houston next Sunday before preparing for the US Open Cup final against the New England Revolution on October 3rd.

The Los Angeles Galaxy remain in last place in the Western Conference, but still have six games remaining to make up the eleven points that separate themselves and eighth place Chicago, though four of those come away from the Home Depot Center. A three-game road trip begins with Thursday's game in Kansas City, followed by a Sunday match in Columbus before ending on October 7th at Houston.
