ANGEL FIRES NYRB PAST FIRE

The New York Red Bulls defeated the Chicago Fire 1-0 on Juan Pablo Angel's second half goal at Giants Stadium on Saturday.

The goal, scored in the 75th minute, was Angel's 14th of the season, tying him for the MLS lead with DC's Luciano Emilio and Kansas City's Eddie Johnson.

Angel received a pass from Dane Richards inside the corner of the 18-yard box on the left side of the field and shot the ball just under the fingertips of sliding Fire goalkeeper Matt Pickens.

The Fire's Cuauhtémoc Blanco's was held to two shots on net, but the Red Bulls keeper Ronald Waterreus blanked him on the scoresheet. The Dutchman saved three shots in all to earn his fifth shutout of the season.

In the 83rd minute, Clint Mathis cleared the ball, inadvertently hitting the hand of teammate Chris Leitch at the center of the 18-yard box. Chicago protested for a handball call, but play continued.

The two teams will meet again on September 15 with the Red Bulls traveling to Toyota Park in Chicago.

UNITED TAKE PIZZA HUT POINTS

Olsen's first goal came just four minutes into the match off an assist from Clyde Simms. He scored again later in first half stoppage time when Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala let a rebound drop for Olsen to tap in.

The beginning of the second half did not go much better for Dallas as DC put in two more quick goals.

Christian Gomez put a shot past Sala in the 47th minute, and three minutes later, Fred added the fourth goal off a cross from the Argentinean.

DC keeper Troy Perkins had three saves in the shutout.

Dallas fans had reason to cheer in the 55th minute when newly-signed Brazilian midfielder Denílson made his MLS debut. He replaced fellow Brazilian Ricardinho.

DYNAMO, WIZARDS FIGHT TO DRAW
The Houston Dynamo and Kansas City Wizards slugged out a 1-1 draw in the Texas heat on Saturday night, with players' tempers getting the best of them in a physical match that lacked an abundance of chances.

Missing several key players for the game, including target forwards Nate Jaqua (one-game suspension) and Brian Ching (calf), Joseph Ngwenya's seventh goal of the season was enough to pull Houston level midway through the second half after Eddie Johnson had put the Wiz in front just seconds before halftime.

In the only minute of first half stoppage time, Kansas City's Michael Harrington laid the ball off for Scott Sealy, who was making a run into the box. Seeing Eddie Johnson making a similar run down the middle, Sealy slid the ball through to the US international, who beat his defender and knocked the ball into the back of the net on the slide.

After the goal, Johnson climbed over the advertising boards and initiated dialogue with several Dynamo supporters in an incident that will likely earn him a fine from the league's disciplinary committee.

As the second half got underway, the already physical match boiled over when Sealy shoved Houston's Ryan Cochrane, causing the Dynamo defender to hit his head against the boards. Cochrane instantly popped up and got in the face of Sealy as several other players joined into the scrum. When tensions cooled, Kansas City's Kurt Morsink and Johnson were both awarded yellow cards for their roles in the disruption.

In the 69th minute, Houston pressed for an equalizer. Midfielder Dwayne De Rosario picked up the ball on a counterattack and raced nearly the length of the field before laying off a perfectly-weighted ball to Ngwenya. Receiving the ball at the top of the box, the native of Plumtree, Zimbabwe ripped a first time strike, beating KC keeper Kevin Hartman at the near post to even the game.

Each team would get a few more chances over the final 20 minutes, but goalkeepers Onstad and Hartman turned aside all challenges to preserve the tie and a point each for their respective teams.

At 9-9-6, the Wizards are only a handful of points away from a three-team battle for the last playoff spot. One of those teams, the Columbus Crew, will be making a visit to Kansas City on Saturday night in a match that could have playoff implications.

With the point, Houston moves three clear of idle Chivas and cross-state rivals FC Dallas in the Western Conference standings, though Chivas has four games in hand and Dallas has a pair.

Scoring
KC - Eddie Johnson 14 (Scott Sealy, Michael Harrington) 45+
HOU - Joseph Ngwenya 7 (Dwayne De Rosario) 69'

Line-ups
KC - Kevin Hartman; Jack Jewsbury (Ryan Raybould 74'), Jimmy Conrad, Nick Garcia, Michael Harrington, Davy Arnaud, Sasha Victorine (Eloy Colombano 72'), Kerry Zavagnin, Kurt Morsink, Eddie Johnson, Scott Sealy (Carlos Marinelli 66')

RAPIDS, CREW SPLIT POINTS
Conor Casey scored just six minutes before full time to give the Colorado Rapids a 1-1 tie away to the Columbus Crew on Sunday afternoon.

With both teams tied in points on the season for the final playoff spot and just a single point in front of the resurgent Chicago Fire, Sunday's game was crucial for both clubs to earn maximum points.

Columbus drew first blood when Eddie Gaven ran onto a brilliant through pass from Stefani Miglioranzi just before halftime, leaving him in a one-on-one situation with Bouna Coundoul. As the Colorado keeper started to come off his line to cut down the angle on a possible shot, Gaven slotted his effort low past Coundoul and into the back of the net, giving Columbus an advantage going into the break.

In the second half, Columbus continued to push forward, searching for an insurance goal. They nearly found it when Guillermo Barros Schelotto beat the Rapids' offside trap with a crisp pass to Alejandro Moreno. With nothing but space in front of him, Moreno raced down the left side and looked certain to score.

As two Colorado defenders reached his back, Moreno readied a shot from inside the box and beat Coundoul with a rocket, only to see it glance off the post and come back into play. The rebound fell to the Crew's Jacob Thomas with the keeper still well out of position, but Thomas' effort was hit poorly, allowing Coundoul to parry it away from danger.

That failed chance would come back to haunt Columbus in the 84th minute when Colorado would find a late equalizer. It started when second half substitute Herculez Gomez sent a searching ball over the top to Mehdi Ballouchy.

Though Ballouchy misplayed the pass, he recovered before the ball crossed over the end line and flipped it back into the middle of the box where Conor Casey was stationed. The former FSV Mainz player rose up and snapped the ball down with his head, beating Crew keeper Will Hesmer to the near side to tie the game with his second goal in as many games.

With the 10th draw of the season for Columbus, the Crew remain level on points with Colorado for the eighth and final playoff spot, with another key match against Chicago scheduled for this Saturday.

The Rapids have gone unbeaten in four straight games to pull themselves back into the playoff hunt, outscoring their opponents 8-1 in that stretch. Their next game won't be for two weeks, when Chivas USA rolls into Commerce City on September 16th.
