| DC gained the rights to Jerson Monteiro from the Chicago Fire, just one year after the Windy City team selected him eighth overall in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft, with eyes on his being a developmental player. Meanwhile, Salt Lake went looking for immediate help in the form of Yura Movsisyan, previously a forward with the Kansas City Wizards. Movsisyan has scored five goals this year, all coming off the bench, and has been one of the more talked about young players in the league, having turned 20 in July. A native of Baku, Azerbaijan, Movsisyan came to the United States seeking political asylum, and now will find himself picking up and moving once again, expected to make an impact right away for the struggling Utah side. In exchange for the striker, RSL have sent a third round pick in 2009, a first round pick in the supplemental draft and a portion of the player allocation to the Missouri side. While Chicago was dealing Monteiro away, they also sent defender Leonard Griffin to the Columbus Crew and added John Thorrington to the 28-man roster. Thorrington has been a part of four different sides in Europe, including Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen, though he never made an appearance with either senior side as his career has mostly been an unfortunate sequence of injuries and bad luck. The South Africa-born US international has already been a part of the Fire system, making 10 appearances and scoring a goal during the 2005 season, but saw his time there come to an end when he was hurt at the start of the following campaign. Griffin was waived earlier this year by the Fire and was later picked up by USL's Portland Timbers, but Chicago had kept the rights in the event that another team wanted his services. In all, Chicago gained a conditional draft pick in 2008 from DC and a supplemental pick from Columbus. |
