MLS Best XI Named

Major League Soccer unveiled its yearly Best XI on Saturday night at the annual MLS Gala Awards dinner, with a number of new faces making the grade.

League Keeper of the year Brad Guzan, who posted 13 shutouts and 87 saves on the season for Chivas USA took the role between the posts for the first time in his career.

The backline is entirely composed of first-time Best XI recipients, with Defender of the Year Michael Parkhurst getting the nod after an outstanding season with MLS Cup runners up New England Revolution. He is joined by Houston Dynamo stopper Eddie Robinson and Chivas USA left back Jonathan Bornstein.

Columbus Crew playmaker Guillermo Barros Schelotto makes the cut in his first MLS season since making the jump from Argentine powerhouse Boca Juniors, He is joined in the middle by compatriot Christian Gomez of DC United, Revolution play-breaker Shalrie Joseph and MLS Cup MVP Dwayne De Rosario of the Dynamo. Ben Olsen completes the midfield allotment for a career first time - surprising considering his status as a league fixture.

Up front, Luciano Emilio becomes the third player from the nation's capital to make the roster, having bagged a noteworthy 20 goals this season.

His Best XI strike partner comes way of Red Bulls hit man Juan Pablo Angel, with the Columbian having posted a breakout season following a stagnant period at Aston Villa, donating 19 goals and five assists to the 2007 NY cause.

The league further announced the winner of the Newcomer of the Year award, which honors first year league additions already boasting a wealth of pro experience. This year's recipient is goal-getter Emilio, who had already been crowed as league MVP and winner of the Budweiser Golden Boot.
