COLUMBUS CAPTURE TRILLIUM TROPHY
The Columbus Crew defeated Toronto FC 2-0 at Crew Stadium to open up the MLS season. The Crew were awarded the Trillium Cup which is awarded to the winner of this rivalry.

The first opportunity of the game was in the seventh minute for Toronto when Jim Brennan lofted a ball to the middle, but goalkeeper Will Hesmer pounced before forward Collin Samuel could get to it.

Tyler Hemming sent in a cross for Toronto five minutes later, but neither Samuel nor Jeff Cunningham could make contact.

The Crew's Argentinean playmaker Guillermo Barros Schelotto found Robbie Rogers in the 20th minute and the US Under-23 winger got past Hemming on the right side of the box. His shot, however, was hit straight at goalkeeper Brian Edwards, who pushed it away.

The Crew went ahead in 26th minute thanks to Adam Moffat's nice shot from outside the box. The Scottish midfielder received the ball from Brian Carroll and then put the ball in the lower left corner of the net past Edwards.

Schelotto's cross in the 35th minute almost gave Moffatt a second goal, but the Scott's header went off the crossbar.

Cunningham ran into the box late in the half and was greeted by a Danny O'Rourke shoulder charge. A penalty was awarded, but Samuel's shot was well saved by Hesmer, who dove to the left to block the shot. Moffat helped clear the rebound out of danger.

Toronto earned several corners early in the second half. Brennan almost equalized on one of them, but his shot was well saved by Hesmer. The rebound almost found the back of the net, but Rogers cleared it out.

The Crew sealed the victory in the 76th minute thanks to Venezuela forward Alejandro Moreno. Eddie Gaven's through ball went behind all of the defenders and Moreno easily to put it past Edwards left heel for a 2-0 lead.

The Crew travel to New York to take on the Red Bulls on Saturday, while Toronto travels to play DC United.

REVS WIN MLS CUP REMATCH

The New England Revolution defeated the Houston Dynamo 3-0 at Gillette Stadium in a rematch of the last two MLS Cups. It was the Revs first ever season opener at home and they capitalized.

New England star forward Taylor Twellman injured his knee in warm-ups and did not play. Adam Cristman took his place in the line-up.

Brian Mullan's giveaway opened up an early chance for the Revs. Kenny Mansally ran down the right side and put in a cross for Adam Cristman that did not find its target.

In the 16th minute, the Revs' Gambian midfielder Sainey Nyassi went down the left side and put the ball between Eddie Robinson and Wade Barrett. Mansally collected the ball and put in a low shot to the far post that was saved by keeper Pat Onstad, but the rebound found Steve Ralston, who put it in the back of the net from six yards out.

Dwayne De Rosario tried to equalize for Houston minutes later, but his header off of Stuart Holden's cross went over the bar.

De Rosario fouled Mauricio Castro in the 32nd minute and New England was awarded a free kick. Ralston played the kick to Jeff Larentowicz, whose shot was saved by Onstad, but as he couldn't hold on to it as he fell to the ground and Cristman put the rebound in the net.

Houston's best chance to take one back came 15 minutes into the second half. Mullan's cross found Holden, whose diving header was saved by a fully-stretched Matt Reis. The ensuing corner saw Robinson head the ball towards goal, but Nyassi cleared it out.

Ralston had to be subbed out in the 63rd after falling awkwardly and apparently injuring his left shoulder. Gary Flood came in for him.

Onstad then made a nice save with about 15 minutes left in the match when he was one-on-one with Cristman, but Nyassi put the Revs up by three in stoppage time when he got the ball at the halfway line before going down the field and smashing home high.

New England plays at Chicago on Thursday, while Houston host Dallas next Sunday.

BLANCO RESCUES FIRE SHARE
The Chicago Fire earned a late point on the road in Salt Lake City to open their 2008 MLS Season.

The first half was a fairly tame affair. Real Salt Lake had the best chance of the half when Fabio Espindola beat Brandon Prideaux to create some space for a shot at the top of the penalty box, but the ball was fired straight at goalkeeper Jon Busch.

The crowd of over 20,000 saw the home side take the lead in the 71st minute. Newly acquired midfielder Dema Kovalenko sent in a low ball into the penalty area attempting to connect with one of the RSL forwards, but Fire defender Bakary Soumare redirected the ball with his leg passed Busch and into the Chicago net for an own goal.

As the clock winded down into injury time, the Fire began to pressure the RSL net. Forward Calen Carr made a move down the right side of the field and sent a cross into the area which defender Nat Borchers attempted to clear. The ball only got as far as Cuauhtémoc Blanco and the Mexican star drilled a one-time effort passed Nick Rimando to salvage a point for Chicago on the road.

The Fire will have their home opener on Thursday against the New England Revolution. The game is a rematch of the 2007 Eastern Conference Championship.

Meanwhile, RSL will head to Carson, California on Saturday for a battle with fellow 2005 expansion club Chivas USA.

COLORADO THRASH LOS ANGELES
The Colorado Rapids defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy 4-0 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday night.

In the 10th minute, the Rapids had a free kick that went off the Galaxy's wall of defenders. Christian Gómez gathered the ball at the top of the box and hit a shot that went off the post, but the carom went straight to Terry Cooke, who then struck a powerful volley into the top right corner of the net to give Colorado a 1-0 lead.

The Colorado defense did a good job of containing Landon Donovan, David Beckham and Carlos Ruiz. The three of them could not string together anything for an equalizer.

In the 60th minute, Omar Cummings was taken down in the penalty box by LA's Abel Xavier and a penalty was awarded. LA tried to appeal to the ref, but that resulted in Xavier getting a yellow card. Gómez took the penalty and put it away for a 2-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, Cooke did a great job of getting the ball down field to find Cummings, who put the ball past the keeper for a 3-0 lead.

Colin Clark made it four in the 80th minute when bested Xavier to rolled under LA keeper Steve Cronin.

The end of the match was ugly and LA's Xavier received a red card in the 89th minute for a bad tackle on Ciaran O'Brien. O'Brien was then given a red for a tackle on Ruiz that left him on the ground in pain. LA players tried to protest the red resulting in a shoving battle between players from the two clubs.

Los Angeles hosts San Jose in a renewal of their rivalry on Thursday, while Colorado play at Kansas City on Saturday.

GALINDO SNATCHES POINT FROM FCD
After a first half goal by Juan Toja gave the Hoops an early lead, substitute Maykel Galindo found the net with six minutes remaining as Chivas USA and FC Dallas battled to 1-1 draw to conclude Major League Soccer's opening weekend.

Neither squad featured a full-strength side in their first match of 2008. FCD was without Drew Moor and Arturo Alvarez because of suspensions, and Chivas was forced to field a team without defensive anchor Claudio Suarez. Galindo began the match on the bench as a precaution while he recovers from sports hernia surgery.

FCD created the first clear-cut chance of the match when Abe Thompson got on the end of a ball over the top, but pressure from Shavar Thomas resulted in a shot directly at reigning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Brad Guzan.

The Hoops broke through in the 21st minute when Toja blasted a shot past a helpless Guzan. Defender Bobby Rhine's cross found Thompson with his back to goal, and the forward slipped a magnificent ball through to Toja, who controlled to bulge the net at Guzan's near post.

Each side registered four first half shots, with only half of those coming on frame; however, Chivas pushed forward in hopes of equalizing after the break. The Goat's first chance came in the 52nd minute when Paulo Nagamura's clever, sliding pass found Ante Razov unmarked on the left edge of the penalty area, but the veteran's left-footed drive was pushed over the bar by Dario Sala.

Chivas continued to test Sala - the Goats finished with 18 second half shots - and a mistake by former Club America and Mexico national team defender Duilio Davino led to the equalizer. Davino failed to clear substitute Raphael Wicky's hopeful long ball, and Galindo took advantage, slipping the ball through Sala's legs to even the match.

Looking for all three points at home, FCD's Brazilian midfielder Andre Rocha narrowly missed giving the home side the lead two minutes into stoppage time. After receiving a squared ball from Dominic Oduro at the top of the box, Rocha avoided the Chivas defense only to fire high and wide right.

Chivas returns to action next Saturday at home against Real Salt Lake, who drew with the Chicago Fire 1-1 in their first action of 2008. FCD will meet in-state rivals Houston Dynamo on Sunday in Houston.
