In the 21st minute, Grimsby's Peter Till dribbled down the field to put in a shot that was blocked by Dons defender Sean O'Hanlon. The ball was then chased down by Paul Bolland, who nicked it over Willy Guéret before being taken down by the French keeper. A penalty was awarded, but Danny Boshell saw his shot was saved by Guéret, who dove to his right to palm the ball away.

Dons captain Keith Andrews had a good chance in the second half when Colin Cameron flicked the ball to him, only to result in the midfielder shoot straight at Mariners keeper Phil Barnes.

Andrews then tried to create something off of Dean Lewington's cross, but the captain's low header was saved by Barnes. Jude Stirling also put in a good cross for American forward Jemal Johnson, who headed over the bar.

In the 73rd minute, Cameron had a good strike from the left side hit the post, but Paul Ince's boys would grab the lead seconds later.

O'Hanlon got the rebound and almost put it in, but the keeper denied him. It did not matter, though, as a penalty was awarded for Nick Hegarty's push on Danny Swailes. Andrews sent the keeper the wrong way and Dons took the 1-0 advantage.

O'Hanlon then scored for Dons in the 81st minute to seal the game. Cameron's corner found O'Hanlon, in the six-yard box and he headed it into the goal off of defender Rob Atkinson.

This is Dons first trophy since coming into existence in 2004 after Wimbledon FC moved to Milton Keynes. MK Dons is in second place in League Two and are behind Peterborough by three points, but have played two less matches before travelling to Lincoln City on Friday.
