Notre Dame attack wizard Joe Lapira arrived at Murray Park Monday for a trial of unknown length with Scottish giants Rangers, American Soccer Daily has learned.

The Louisiana native holds an Irish passport, which could smooth a potential move, and has one friendly cap for the Republic to his name.

Lapira was expected to come to Scotland for an Aberdeen look, but apparently Rangers have stepped up in the queue. The Ibrox outfit would not reveal any details, but informed ASD that comment on the trial would soon appear on their official website.

The 20-year old All-American striker is coming off a 2006 junior campaign that saw him bag 22 goals and six assists for the Fighting Irish.

Should Lapira latch on with the blue half of Glasgow, he would join recently acquired countryman DaMarcus Beasley.

UPDATE: Lapira's Rangers trial may have ended before it really began, but the Notre Dame star stated Tuesday that he had already decided to return to school for the completion of his degree before heading overseas for a club career before setting foot at Murray Park.

"I hurt my calf in my first training session, so I'm not sure how much they will be able to assess me," he reported to Sportsmail.

"It doesn't matter too much, though, because I was always going to go back home until the end of the year to finish my studies."
