Joy: Millerntor is Our Cup Lair

by Greg Seltzer - August 15, 2007

St. Pauli left back Ian Joy has declared that the team can make another DfB Pokal run this year if they are set up for the key opponents with Millerntor matches.

The Pirates pulled an opening round upset over Bayer Leverkusen to stir memories of their 2005/06 foray. Pauli were ousted by an extra time own goal against Bayern Munich at the first hurdle last fall, but they engineered a stirring semifinal showing two editions back.

That year, Joy & Co. ousted top flighters esteemed Hertha Berlin and Werder Bremen at their imposing home ground, where the players enter to strains of "Hell's Bells" by AC/DC.

This time around, the Reeperbahn boys shut down a Bayer side that includes internationals such as Switzerland’s Tranquillo Barnetta and Germany's Bernd Schneider to start their German Cup odyssey.

"You know we are very strong at home! Even Bayern Munich have found it very hard to beat us," Joy recently boasted to American Soccer Daily. "With our fans at the Millerntor, it's always going to be hard for any team to beat us."

"We have a great team spirit and that drives us to always give 100% for one another."

Unlike most upsets, Joy claims he wasn't doing any slow clock watching late in their August 4th performance. "It's really strange, but when the referee blew the final whistle, I was shocked," he admitted.

"I thought there was at least 20 minutes still to play. We were on a roll, and if we had played another 20 minutes, we would have scored at least one more goal."

Joy did not appear in their season opening loss to FC Cologne, but he says it's not because he is slipping.

"Every player is playing well right now and with confidence," he reported. "There were players who had to sit on the bench on (last week) who could have started the game and played just as well, and having this quality in the team helps."

Pauli will continue their 2.Bundesliga campaign Saturday at Carl Zeiss Jena, with the second round Pokal match-up sending them to Werder Bremen II on October 7th.
