LA Galaxy have appointed US legend Cobi Jones as assistant coach to Ruud Gullit.

Jones, all time leader in appearances for the National Team with 164 caps and a three-time World Cup veteran, was unveiled alongside the Dutch legend at the Home Depot Center on Friday.

The 37 year-old finally hung up his cleats with the Galaxy this fall after suiting up in every season since MLS inception in 1996, following spells with Coventry City in England and Vasco da Gama in Brazil.

California-born Jones made 305 appearances for the Galaxy, scoring 70 goals and saw his number 13 retired at the end of the current season.

"I'm happy to be here as an assistant coach and to be able to say that I can actually work with Ruud Gullit," he said at the announcement. "Obviously, it will be a little bit of a change for me, but it's something that I look forward to."

Gullit told reporters how accepting the job offer to coach the Galaxy was an easy decision for him, and how he shares the club management's desire for success.

"I talked yesterday with Tim (Leiweke) about the vision of the club," he said, "And I totally agree with him that a club like LA Galaxy is a club that is used to winning things. We will do everything in our power to win. It's a huge challenge, but also a privilege."

"We have signed a world class coach and leader for this franchise," explained AEG CEO Leiweke. "We have asked him to do what is required to build a model MLS franchise and a club that expects to win every time we take the pitch, regardless of the competition."
