HANSA WINS HIGH SCORING EAST DERBY
For 86 minutes, Heath Pearce watched from the sidelines as goals unexpectedly racked up before he was substituted in for former Germany national teamer Christian Rahn to do his share in Hansa's 3-2 victory over Energie Cottbus.

Neither team is known for an effective offense, but each started out very aggressively trying to land the first strike.

Enrico Kern grabbed an outstanding hat trick for the first time in his Bundesliga career, in the process earning Man of the Match acclaim.

Kern started off in the 18th minute, getting on the end of a clever pass before slotting home coolly from just yards out.

Vragel da Silva would pull Energie back into the match in the 58th minute after profiting from a defensive inability to clear the ball.

Nevertheless, it would be Kern to restore the lead for Die Kögge just a minute later after catching the defense still celebrating by getting onto the end of a drifted long ball.

In the 74th minute, Kern would hit for his third before watching as Hansa conceded a nervous 90th minute goal from an Ervin Skela free kick to keep the game's result in doubt.

Pearce and the boys would hold on to the lead to claim a valuable three points.

After the international break, Hansa will travel to Hamburg to face in-form HSV.

96 LOSE IN CAPITAL BLIZZARD

In a heavy snowfall, Hertha Berlin accomplished a 1-0 victory over Steve Cherundolo's Hannover 96, with the ex-Portland defender going the distance. Fellow American Sal Zizzo, on the other hand, was not named to the match squad.

The conditions made it hard for both teams to present a halfway decent game, with both teams trying to score via distance shots. In the 20th minute, 96 got lucky when keeper and captain Robert Enke stumbled while trying to catch a 30-yard shot from Gilberto, with the effort only missing by an inch.

Hannover had a relatively quiet first half, with Cherundolo giving away Hannover's best opportunity as he lost his footing while trying to control a Mike Hanke pass in the 23rd minute, leaving Hertha goalie Jaroslav Drobny breathing a sigh of relief after being stranded in his tracks.

After halftime, 96 found a better grip on the game, releasing quite a few shots at Berlin's goal, including a 51st minute effort from Hanke.

In the end, though, it was substitute André Lima who decided the match in favor of the home side. In the 87th minute, Malik Fathi crossed the ball to the Brazilian striker, who supplied a lethal finish to score his first goal for Berlin.

Hannover will get their next chance for all three points in two week's time, when Schalke will come to visit.

MAINZ STEAMROLL THE VIOLETS

Former US youth international Neven Subotić reclaimed his role at the back following a week's absence as Mainz claimed a 4-1 victory over league newcomers Osnabrück.

Meanwhile, fellow American Joe Enochs remained an unused sub as his away side struggled for an attacking foothold. For VfL, it was the fifth away game defeat in a row.

Mainz 05 underlined their current performance impressively, leaving little doubt of being serious contenders for a direct return to Bundesliga.

Tim Hoogland kicked off the scoring with a 23rd minute header from a Daniel Gunkel corner.

With the hosts firmly leading, VfL striker Thomas Reichenberger gave Mainz coach Jürgen Klopp something discuss in his halftime team-talk, as the veteran attacker powered his header past stand in keeper Daniel Ischdonat, one minute before the interval.

Whatever was said seemed to work, with defender Felix Borja equalizing in the 62 minute, before Chadli Amri hit for three 88 minutes in, squeaking his shot in by the near post.

Gunkel, having played supplier for the opener, dotted the exclamation point with his 90th minute strike from the spot.

The result leaves Osnabrück dropped two places down to 12th, while Subotić and Mainz climb to third.

After the international break a Friday clash with Carl Zeiss Jena will be Osnabrück's next challenge, while Mainz have a Monday trip to Luis Robles' Kaiserslautern to tend to.

JOY AS PAULI CLAIM STRONG VICTORY
American defender Ian Joy will be giving coach André Trulsen a selection headache after bagging the winner for St. Pauli in resounding 2-0 victory over 16th place Augsburg.

The left back has found himself in a competition for playing time with Marcel Eger, but in his German rival to the post's absence, bellowed a thorough message with a goal to lift his side into 10th place.

In the 17th minute, Fabian Boll intuitively lobbed a perfectly weighted ball into the path of an on-running Joy, who sweetly struck on the half-volley to claim the lead.

Pauli pass-master Thomas Meggle had a clear chance to double the advantage, but saw his 24th minute header denied by a work of supreme goaltending from Sven Neuhaus.

Joy made himself useful at the other end as well, standing tall to clear Mourad Hdiouad's attempt off the line in the 33rd minute.

It took until the 55th minute for Pauli to crack the defense once more, with substitute Björn Brunneman curling in a long range effort to catch Neuhaus out of position.

In the 69th minute, the visitors conjured a late effort to get back in, but keeper Patrick Borger did enough to deny Hdiouad's effort and secure a clean sheet.

After the international break, St. Pauli face an away day at Erzgebirge Aue.

Scoring
STP - Ian Joy 1 (Fabian Boll) 17'
STP - Björn Brunneman 1 55'

ON THE SIDELINE
Kamani Hill played no part as Wolfsburg was downed by Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 at home.

FC Kaiserslautern keeper Luis Robles remained a patient observer from the bench as starter Tobias Sippel and FCK succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at Alemannia Aachen.
