"Throughout his career, Gallardo has been a dynamic attacking midfielder known for remarkable technique, impressive speed and quickness and an uncanny knack for providing service to his teammates," United president and CEO Kevin Payne stated in a written statement.

The 32-year old midfielder began his career at Argentina powerhouse River Plate. During his stint with the club, Gallardo helped lead Los Millionairos to four league championships and a 1996 Copa Libertadores title.

The 1998 and 2002 World Cup participant made his way to Europe in 1999 to play for Monaco of France's Ligue 1. In his time at Monaco, Gallardo excelled, winning the 2000 French Footballer of the Year Award.

Gallardo joins MLS on a free transfer after a brief stint with French club Paris St. Germain.
