Fire Attacking a Playoff Spot

by Greg Seltzer - September 19, 2007

Fresh from a gutsy comeback draw against New York on the weekend, the Chicago Fire are getting their attack act together at the right time to gain entrance into the playoffs.

Since the All-Star break, the Men in Red have four wins and two draws from eight games, a stretch that has them holding down the eighth and final postseason slot.

Colorado are one point behind the Fire, while arch rivals Columbus are two points back.

With summer addition Cuauhtémoc Blanco stirring the pot, the Fire have increased their offensive output while remaining tight at the back.

After a July swoon that saw them tally just once in five games, the Toyota Park bunch have hit for multiple goals in five of eight - midfielder Diego Gutierrez believes the team is on the right track to make the second season.

"We gotta be consistent in terms of creating chances," he opined to American Soccer Daily. "I think we're doing that."

"We've got to get some wins," added Chad Barrett. "We're a contender, like we always have been. We're showing teams we're going to be a hard team to beat the last six games, home or away."
