The Houston defender, fresh off a second straight MLS championship with the Dynamo, could be joined in central defense by #2 pick Clarence Goodson of FC Dallas. In all, half of coach Frank Yallop and general manager John Doyle's picks were backliners.

Columbus midfielder Ned Grabavoy was selected third, New England defender James Riley fourth and New York defensive midfielder Joe Vide fifth. Veteran midfielder Ivan Guerrero of Chicago and Brian Carroll wee the next two choices, with Chivas USA defender Jason Hernandez, Los Angeles striker Gavin Glinton and Toronto defender Chris Pozniak rounding out the list.

Colorado, Kansas City and Real Salt Lake did not have a player chosen from their list of available players.
