Fiorentina had won the first leg 2-0 in Italy and Everton won 2-0 on Wednesday night to send it to extra time.

Everton started out strong despite being without Tim Cahill. Andrew Johnson put the Blues ahead from about six yards out in the 16th minute off a cross from Steven Pienaar.

Mikel Arteta then almost put the Toffees up by two, but Fiorentina keeper Sebastien Frey made a nice save. The Fiorentina star also denied Ayegbeni Yakubu in the 34th minute.

Martin Jørgensen registered Fiorentina's only good chance of the half, but it was easily saved by American keeper Tim Howard. The game went to half time at 1-0 with Everton needing at least a goal to extend the tie.

Everton's Phil Jagielka helped the Everton attack with a header, but a Fiorentina defender cleared it at the last moment.

Arteta got the crucial goal for the Blues in the 67th minute on a low diagonal drive from 25 yards out that Frey could not get to.

Yakubu almost got the game winner for Everton on two occasions, but Frey was able to keep the ball out.

Giampaolo Pazzini's header for Fiorentina would have ended the game with 15 minutes left, but Howard made a nice save.

Joseph Yobo then headed an Arteta free kick just wide in stoppage time and the game went to extra time.

Yakubu was unmarked in a scoring position in the 108th minute, but Johnson could not deliver a good ball and the game would be decided by penalties.

Thomas Gravesen and Pazzini were up first for Everton and each scored, then Yakubu made a crucial miss by hitting the post. Riccardo Montolivo and Arteta exchanged goals before Pablo Daniel Osvaldo scored for Fiorentina to put the Italian side ahead 3-2.

Jagielka's shot was then saved by Frey and Mario Santana scored the winning goal for Fiorentina to end the shootout.

Everton will now return to league play to face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
