ROVERS DUMP FULHAM FROM CUP
Fulham's dire season continued as the relegation-threatened Londoners were dumped out of the FA Cup by Bristol Rovers.

The Cottagers, 43 places above their League One hosts in England's soccer pyramid, lost 5-3 on penalties after their third round replay ended goalless at the Memorial Stadium.

Carlos Bocanegra and Clint Dempsey went the distance for their club, who are now winless in 13 contests.

A heavy and sticky field worked to the Pirates' advantage, as they had their Premier League visitors on the back foot for much of the 90.

Fulham resume their league survival struggle next Tuesday away to Bolton.

RAMS ADVANCE PAST OWLS ON PKS
Sheffield Wednesday & Derby tied 1-1 at Hillsborough, but the Premier League team won 5-3 on spot-kicks to book a fourth round FA Cup clash at home to Preston.

Frank Simek and Benny Feilhaber were absent, but Eddie Lewis played 48 minutes after replacing Giles Barnes.

After opening on the heavy offensive, Derby found themselves behind in the ninth minute. Veteran midfielder Steve Watson did the honors from a tempting Jermaine Johnson cross.

Wednesday took the goal as a clue, spending much of the first half remainder swarming the home goal to no avail.

Two minutes out of intermission, Kenny Miller equalized with a 20-meter net seeker, and the Rams gained the momentum.

The clock ran through 90, and then a largely uneventful extra 30, necessitating penalties. Glenn Whelan and Kenny Lunt missed for the Owls, helping Derby claim a 4-2 spot kicks win.

Lewis, who made his shootout penalty count, now faces his old club as Derby host Preston on Saturday for an improbable place in the last 16.

BLUES NIP EVERTON OUT OF CUP
Tim Howard and Everton were ousted from the Carling Cup after a second one-goal loss to Wednesday hosts Chelsea.

The American was in Nicolas Anelka danger twice in the first half, with the first chance turned away and the second rebounding off the crossbar.

Big early second half stops on Phil Neville and Phil Jagielka by Petr Cech set up the Blues winner, which Joe Cole lashed home with 21 minutes remaining on the clock.

The Toffees will try to get back on track against league visitors Tottenham on Wednesday.
