Without a single league point and locked in last place, Frank Simek's Owls desperately needed a win against Burnley on Tuesday night, but succumbed to a 2-0 defeat instead.

Sheffield Wednesday has forged a rough start to the season, to say the least, having lost all of the opening six fixtures, with no moment of respite in sight.

Having ventured near taste of promotion playoff slots last campaign, the expectations of this season haven't fallen far from that tree. As a result, the dismal performances of the opening weeks have brought into the question the future of now under fire manager Brian Laws, although club directors have yet to cede to that route.

The action started brightly for the visitors, with Robbie Blake preying on defensive discomposure to rile up the Owls backline, narrowly missing the game opener in the 10th minute.

Persistence would pay off, however, and the striker capitalized on a failed clearance to strike at the quarter hour mark, and set Burnley ahead on the board.

For American Simek, it was a long day at the back, made only more loathsome by sloppy possession play in the build up of the second goal.

It was yet again Blake who played predator by tussling the former Gunner into the corner, before disarming him of the ball and playing in an open Chris McCann to double the advantage.

With his job on the line, Laws made a desperate attempt at reviving his nocturnal owls from their lethargy by bringing on more firepower in Deon Burton and former Derby ace Marcus Tudgay. To no avail, however, as Wednesday never seemed in step with the Tuesday grind.

The focus now turns to the promise of next week, with a home clash against Hull on Saturday.
