READING CONTINUES SLIDE
Sunderland scored once in the first half and again just after halftime, then held off a late Reading charge to hand the visitors their fourth straight loss.

Kenwyne Jones scored first in his home debut and helped Sunderland snap a four game losing streak of their own.

Reading were unable to find any answers for a defense that had given up nine goals in their last four contests and the Stadium of Light tenants made them pay.

Jones, the £6 million striker from Southampton, put on a fine display, opening the scoring in the 29th after causing a lot of discomfort for the Reading backline in the lead-up.

Grant Leadbitter served the Trinidad & Tobago native, who fired a left-footed shot past Hahnemann.

Ross Wallace doubled the lead two minutes after the half when he fired home a cross from Jones.

Nicky Shorey sent in a corner ball for Dave Kitson, who halved the score in the 84th minute, giving Reading some hope, but Roy Keane's boys would hold on for all three points.

Reading return home next weekend when they host Wigan Athletic.

FULHAM SUFFER LATE EQUALIZER
Clint Dempsey continued collecting goals, but he and Fulham were denied the full points by an 80th minute Wigan spot kick on Saturday.

Though Wigan came out strong and had Fulham on the defensive in the first three minutes, it was Fulham forward Dempsey who would put the visitors on the board in the 10th minute.

Diomansy Kamara found the former Revolution man eight yards out and the American put the ball past Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland to give Fulham the early score.

His American teammate and Fulham captain Carlos Bocanegra nearly doubled the lead in the 25th when his downward header went just wide of the right side post.

Wigan thought they had equalized in the 32nd minute, but Antti Niemi was ruled to have been fouled before the ball crossed the line.

Kirkland came up big in the second half to deny Dempsey his brace when the forward took a shot after running a give-and-go with his assist man Kamara.

Fulham were finally undone by some clumsy defending on the part of Hameur Bouazza, who tumbled over Wigan defender Mario Melchiot on the right side of the box. Referee Rob Styles immediately called for the penalty and Jason Koumas left Niemi no chance with a perfectly placed conversion.

Fulham host Manchester City next Saturday afternoon at the Cottage.

FRIEDEL POSTS CHELSEA SHUTOUT
Blackburn stole a point on the road to Chelsea with a 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon, giving Brad Friedel his second straight shutout.

Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho was left fuming after the match, berating the linesman who ruled Salomon Kalou offside and controversially nullifying the go-ahead goal.

Chelsea had their share of chances in the first half and Rovers themselves were thwarted despite the puncturing runs from Roque Santa Cruz and Benni McCarthy.

Michael Essien put Friedel to the test in the 27th when he sent a volley to the top corner, only to see the former US first choice keeper leave the ground to tip the shot over the crossbar.

On the half hour, Ukrainian forward Andriy Shevchenko put one touch too many when Essien put him through on goal, giving Friedel the time he needed to collect.

With Chelsea unable to truly cause any trouble for the visitors, Mourinho made a double substitution in the 54th, bringing on France star Florent Malouda and John Obi Mikel.

Almost immediately afterwards came Kalou's controversial "goal" that replays seemed to show should not have been disallowed.

Robbie Savage forced Petr Cech into a one-handed save in the 76th, and Friedel once again came up big in the 84th when he fabulously saved a header from Shevchenko.

Blackburn take on Larissa in UEFA cup play on Thursday in Greece.

WATFORD WIN IN DRAMATIC FASHION
Second half substitute Darius Henderson scored one goal to bring Watford back even and another in stoppage time to give his side a come from behind win on Sunday.

With the victory, Watford remain undefeated on the season and climb into first place with four wins and a draw.

Jay DeMerit went 90 minutes in the center of defense for the Hornets.

Dan Shittu opened the scoring for the home side three minutes before the break when he headed home a cross at the far post from Tommy Smith, who had collected a punch save from Kelvin Davis.

Grzegorz Rasiak, who had slipped in behind the defense on a nice ball from Nathan Dyer, leveled the score one minute into first half stoppage time with a low shot past Watford netminder Mart Poom.

Dyer added a goal to his point total for the day when he curled a superb 25-footer past Poom just inside the right post for his first goal of the season.

Henderson, who had moved to the bench for new signing Nathan Ellington, came on in the 65th minute and made his presence known in the 81st with his first goal of the day.

Defender Lloyd Doyley put a pinpoint cross in for the substitute, who made no mistake in finishing past Davis.

The winner came when Henderson pounced on a rebound from a shot from Gavin Mahon, sending Watford to the showers with all three points.

ONE GOAL TOO MUCH FOR OWLS
Sheffield Wednesday suffered their fifth straight defeat at Preston, leaving them still without a win on the new season.

Paul Gallagher scored just before the half hour when he followed up on a rebound from a shot from Andrew Carroll.

Gallagher had been very dangerous, just missing twice in the first half, but would be subbed out after picking up a knock early in the second half.

Etienne Esajas almost equalized the affair in the 48th, but he struck the far post from the right side of the penalty area.

Though Wednesday would have a few more chances in the second half, they were unable to find the back of the net.

Simek and Wednesday return home to face Burnley on Tuesday.

Team captain Keith Andrews scored on both sides of the half, leading his side to their first away win of the season as the Dons dominated Brentford throughout the match.

Andrews first mark came in the 24th minute when Dean Lewington found him after a quick restart and he unleashed from 40 yards. Brentwood keeper Karleigh Osborne couldn't hold on and the ball eked past him for the opener.

Johnson came on in the 70th for Leon Knight and first notched an assist when he found Andrews cutting across the box to send his second goal past Osborne.

Then with the end of the game looming, Johnson latched onto a long rebound and volleyed in his first goal of the season into the top corner.
