▪ Bradley: Season A Slight Letdown

Hammarby finally broke out of their scoring slump with a 2-0 derby victory over Stockholm rivals Djurgårdens on Wednesday night. Charlie Davies helped ice the victory with a cool finish near time.

Hammarby went into Wednesday's game goalless and winless in their last four league games, and in desperate need of a moral boosting victory against their cross-town rivals. Bajen did well to take the game to Djurgårdens and enjoyed the greater number of chances throughout the night, though they had nothing to show for the first 45 minutes.

Davies was at the middle of one of the best early chances when he cleverly flicked a pass to an onrushing Petter Andersson, who was excellent throughout the night. Unfortunately, his right-footed drive from outside the box was punched away by Pa Dembo Tourray.

The American's partner up top had two more good chances to extend the lead, but his shots could not find their way past Tourray.

The best chance of the first half, however, came to Haris Laitinen, who suffered one of the misses of the season. Erkan Zengin powered down the right flank and crossed a low hard pass that just missed a sliding Davies. Laitinen met the ball at the far post, but somehow contrived to send his shot back across the goal toward a grateful Tourray.

Hammarby were not demoralized and started the second half well. Djurgårdens tried to get back some attacking initiative when they brought on teenager Sebastian Rajalasko, who has been one of the surprises of the young season, in the 54th minute.

Just as Djurgårdens was getting a grip on the game, Hammarby finally broke out of their slump. The supplier was Zengin, who again got past Jan Tauer on the right flank to send a cross-cum-shot that Tourray could only parry, leaving Paulinho Guará with an easy finish to give Hammarby a 58th minute lead.

Djurgårdens tried to push for an equalizer, and they looked more dangerous as Hammarby handed them the initiative by making a number of defensive substitutions, including taking out sharp edges Andersson and Zengin.

As the game opened up, Davies and Paulinho were given more room and one counterattack led to a cute give-and-go where the American set up his Brazilian partner. Unfortunately, he waited just a second too long when he had a clean look on goal and the defense was able to get a foot on his shot.

Bajen were more clinical on the next chance, however, as Paulinho released Davies into space with only one defender to beat. The USMNT forward froze his marker, Djurgårdens captain Markus Johansson, and then burst around him with a quick touch to finish with a low drive inside the far post that sent the visiting Hammarby supporters into a frenzy.

Davies celebrated his goal by taking off his shirt and flashing a number of poses for his supporters, and gladly accepted a booking for his efforts.

The win moves Hammarby back into the middle of the table after 10 games. On Monday, Bajen host struggling Gefle IF, who have only picked up five points in their first nine contests.
