AALBORG STAY ON TOP
Aalborg BK defended their three-point lead on defending champions FC Copenhagen in the SAS Liga with a 2-0 home win over Viborg FF in front of 4,729 on Sunday afternoon.

Danny Califf played his usual 90 minutes with the captain's armband in AaB's defense, but did not have his best day on the slick surface and received a yellow card in the 32nd minute for a clumsy handball. Robbie Russell, meanwhile, did not dress for Viborg.

It was AaB who took control from the beginning and their heavy pressure was interrupted only by the occasional attempted counterattack, with Christian Olsen trying to capitalize on his speed advantage over Califf. After some early scares, the Californian positioned himself accordingly.

The opener came after 22 minutes when left back Martin Pedersen's cross found a wide open Kasper Risgård in the box. With all the time in the world, Risgård easily sent it past Viborg keeper John Alvbåge.

Seven minutes later, a corner from Anders Due found Thomas Enevoldsen at the edge of the area and his shot sailed into the top left corner to make it 2-0.

The second half saw good chances for both teams. Both Risgård and top scorer Jeppe Curth hit the woodwork, while AaB keeper Karim Zaza came out on top in a one-on-one with Olsen.

With seven minutes left on the clock, seemingly well-founded appeals for a penalty went unheard when Olsen went down in the area after another one-on-one with Zaza, and the 2-0 scoreline held.

AaB maintain their three-point lead on FC Copenhagen before next weekend's trip to Brøndby, while Viborg is still in the relegation muck, but will take some comfort in Aarhus GF's loss to Odense BK. Viborg host FC Copenhagen next weekend.

RANDERS BOOK FIRST 2008 WIN

Randers recorded their first win of 2008 with a 1-0 home result against Esbjerg in front of 3,815 spectators on Sunday afternoon.

Lee Nguyen played the first 55 minutes for Randers before being replaced by Jeppe Brandrup, but the American is still struggling to find his footing in Danish soccer. Esbjerg backup keeper Tally Hall watched from the bench, while Will John did not dress for Randers.

The only goal of the game was scored in the 31st minute when a corner kick found Søren Berg, who set up captain Ralf Pedersen for an easy tap-in.

Esbjerg came forward after the goal, but good chances for Søren Rieks late in the first half and Michäel Murcy early in the second were missed.

With the heavy pressure put on the home side, chances on the counterattack were bound to happen, and with 17 minutes to go, Lars Winde stopped Carsten Fredgaard's good attempt to keep the score at ones.

The three points send Randers past Esbjerg into seventh place before next weekend's trip to Horsens.

AGF FALL AT ODENSE

Aarhus GF put up a good fight, but it was to goals by Odense's Jonas Borring that settled the game in front of 6,149 spectators at Fionia Park on Sunday evening.

Jeremiah White played the full 90 minutes in right midfield, but the American could not turn the tides for the visitors.

With no less than six injuries in the squad, few predicted points for AGF and it was the home side that put on the pressure from the beginning, with shots from Johan Absalonsen and Cristian Bolaños saved by Steffen Rasmussen.

Therefore, it was no surprise when Borring was first to a rebound outside the area in the 34th minute and thundered the ball into the net.

Ten minutes later, it was Absalonsen who raided down the right flank before serving a flat square ball for Borring to make it two.

AGF tried hard to turn it around in the second half. Liberian striker Dioh Williams was clean through on the left nine minutes into the half, but misdirected his finish.

Another attempt by Williams was saved by Arek Onyszko 15 minutes later and his final attempt in the 90th minute hit the crossbar.

Despite the loss, AGF stay above the relegation line, six points clear of Viborg.
