Watford skipper Jay DeMerit says he is not worried about having been left on the bench for the past few games by coach Aidy Boothroyd.

The Wisconsin-born defender may still be writing his 'Captain America' column in the club program, but since missing four games in February with a pulled hamstring, has found Leigh Bromby taking his center back starting slot for the last three matches.

"I am under no illusions," DeMerit told American Soccer Daily. "You have to work hard to get in the team and stay in the team. I have been out for the last month and those who have come in and filled my shoes have done so very well."

DeMerit has made 28 appearances for Watford this season and scored once, as his team competes to make it back to the Premier League. The Hornets blew an early season lead of nine points and are now second in the standings, three points off the top with 10 games to play.

"At this point in the season, there is no point in anybody feeling sorry for themselves," said DeMerit. "It is all about the squad and the game, whether I am starting or on the bench. It is my job to get back into the team, but if I am on the bench then it is my job to get the boys going."

First plays second when Watford visit table-toppers Bristol City on Tuesday.
