North End Wait On Dalby Permit

Former Notre Dame midfielder Greg Dalby has agreed to join Championship battlers Preston North End, pending approval of a work permit.

The Deepdale crew, former employers of Brian McBride and Eddie Lewis, are hoping to get the uncapped player's deal rubber stamped by the UK Home Office under the same "exceptional talent" criteria that recently allowed Manchester United to sign Porto youngster Anderson.

Preston clinched the agreement in June, but now have applied for approval and expect the work permit hearing to take place sometime next week.

"The paperwork went in on Wednesday," North End press officer Matt Morris told American Soccer Daily. "Normally, this procedure takes about seven days."

"He's agreed to come here, but we won't reveal for how many years the contract is until he has the permit."

Dalby, who recently completed an extended visit with Celtic, has also been chatted up by FC Aarau, Siena and Werder Bremen since being selected in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids.

The two-time Fighting Irish All-American served as US captain at the 2005 Under-20 World Cup in the Netherlands, and PNE manager Paul Simpson is eager to secure his services.

"He's a central midfield player, more of a sitting, holding midfield player, but he's a good athlete," he told the club website. "He's good technically, with both feet and I just think he is a player who as a 20-year old will be a good addition to our squad and hopefully good for the future."
