Rovers Secure UEFA Cup Play

Brad Friedel had little to do in a 4-0 win that saw his Blackburn Rovers cruise to UEFA Cup qualification through the Intertoto Cup over Lithuanian side FK Vetra.

The veteran keeper was a spectator for most of the afternoon as he watched the aggregate score tallied up to 6-0.

David Bentley was tied to much of Rovers' creation, setting up Morten Gamst Pedersen with a pin-point cross in the 25th minute for the game's first goal.

With five minutes to go until halftime, Vetra found itself in a predicament as club captain Dejan Milošeski was sent to an early shower for picking up a second yellow.

Three minutes after the break, Norwegian playmaker Pedersen ran rampant down the left to set the ball delicately for Jason Roberts, with the big ex-Wigan striker coolly slotting away to double the lead.

In the 52nd minute, Bentley provided South African hit man Benni McCarty with a sublime delivery to which the consistent goal-getter brilliantly replied with an acrobatic overhead strike for Rovers' third score.

Just moments later, the home side added insult to injury for their Lithuanian visitors when Pedersen's free kick hobbled into the back of the net after appearing to take a slight touch off of defender Christopher Samba's big frame to make it 4-0.

With the scoreline set, Blackburn manager Mark Hughes had the comfort and luxury of testing some young guys, with Under-21 European Championship stars Maceo Rigters and Matt Derbyshire coming on for Roberts and McCarthy.

Rovers now leave the humble surroundings of Ewood Park on Wednesday for an away date with Huddersfield Town before kicking off the EPL season against Middlesbrough at the Riverside on August 11th.
