Freddy Adu made his first league appearance in the 82nd minute for Angel Di Maria, but was unable to recreate his midweek dramatics from Benfica's win over Estrela Amadora in the Portuguese Cup.

A rather uneventful first half led to few chances, though Rui Costa would test Sporting's Vladimir Stojkovic near halftime and Luis Miguel Veloso compelled Eagles keeper Quim to make a diving save in first half extra time.

Eight minutes after the start of the second half, Nuno Gomez missed out on a golden opportunity to put the hosts ahead when he missed an open net.

Adu was unable to spark the Eagles with his entrance late in the second half and the tie leaves Benfica in fourth place, one behind Sporting with 10 points.
